“You’re uncomfortable with our short courtship, so we should spend as much time together as possible during my visit. Anything you want to know, ask.”

She nodded, her eyes slowly clearing. As she sat straighter, she pulled her sweater over the top of her to cover her nudity. Her shyness was endearing but unnecessary.

His cell phone went off, and his mood instantly soured. “I’ll be right back.”

Xander grabbed his phone and walked into the adjoining room. It was his son calling.

“You’re up early,” Xander said.

“Father, I’ve been talking with Greer from the Fury Riders Pack—”

“Our enemies?” he interrupted.

“They’re not our enemies. We’re all the same. Humans are the enemies.”

“This again?” Xander paced the room. He ground his teeth together. It pissed him off how disobedient his son was. Ifhe was a regular member of his pack, he would have taken him out long ago.

“We have to embrace our wolves or we’ll go extinct,” Tyson said.

“Wrong. Hiding in the forests and pretending the world isn’t changing around us will drive all shifters into extinction.” He took a breath, not wanting to get too loud with Willa in the other room.

“Look, Dad, he’s not the monster you’ve made him out to be. He’s fun, laid back, and doesn’t give a shit about shifter politics. He’s willing to merge, to live in peace with us. We can hunt together, keep our own communities free from humans.”

“He’s blinded you, Tyson. That’s why I’m the alpha. It’s my responsibility to protect the pack, especially from our rivals. You never should have spoken with him!”

“He wants to meet.”

Xander tossed both arms into the air for a moment, his phone in a fist. “Fuck that, Tyson. Have you lost your damn mind?”

“Tonight. I told him you’re staying in the city this week.”

The little prick gave his location to his sworn enemy? He may be eighteen, but Xander must have sheltered his son too much as a child because he was acting like an immature pup.

“When I see you, I’ll deal with you.” He hung up the phone and threw it at the bed. His claws broke free as he paced, a deep-seated rage threatening to break free. How was he supposed to make his son see reason?

Chapter Six

Willa didn’t know how she was supposed to look at Xander after this morning. She’d been playing it over and over inside her head, and nothing in her world made any sense anymore. Before he turned up, the world was spinning so slowly, and she was just doing what she could to survive, but now, it was all out of control, and she didn’t know what to do to put it back into some kind of focus.

Everything was all over the place.

No real structure. No real anything.

There was no peace. Just this overwhelming sensation of need.

She had never felt this way before. Which was why she was standing outside of the campus, dressed in one of her work-to-evening dresses. She only owned a few, and this was the best of the bunch.

Nerves started to attack her.

If the dean found out about this, her job would be over. It was all she had. This was a big mistake.

She hadn’t seen Tyson since his father had gotten here. He’d slipped out on a couple of their study sessions today.

Willa glanced down at her watch to see that she was a little early. She couldn’t help but worry that he might have stood her up. There was a big possibility that it was exactly what he’d done. She was going to give him at least five more minutes and then she’d head back home and consider herself all kinds of a fool for believing for a second this could be anything.

Just as she was heading toward the last minute, a large black car pulled up to the curb and Xander stepped out. She was instantly wet for him.

He didn’t say anything, just moved toward her, cupped her face, and then pressed her up against the car.
