Willa wondered how she’d get home when an SUV pulled up along the side of the road. Two big men tore out and forciblygrabbed her, shoving her into the backseat. She attempted to scream, but a meaty hand slapped over her mouth, stealing any sound from escaping.

It was dark, the windows heavily tinted. As she tried to scan the inside of the vehicle, a dark sack was pulled down over her head, leaving her in complete darkness. The air turned stale and panic set in.

Why was this happening?

What would they get out of kidnapping her?

This was just like the start of every crime novel she’d read recently, and the woman always ended up dead.

****

Xander had fucked everything up. He wasn’t sure how to introduce Willa to his wolf, but once they were officially mated, he didn’t want to waste any time. She trusted him, so he didn’t want to hide the truth from her for longer than necessary. Unfortunately, there was no handbook for introducing your human mate into the world of shifters, so he was struggling.

And ultimately failed.

How would he convince Willa to give him and his wolf a chance? Was she just in shock? Did she not think his fangs were real? Or did he terrify her?

He scrubbed a hand down his face. As much as he wanted to give her space, he couldn’t leave her running around town half-naked and crying.

Xander quickly pulled on his pants, not bothering to find another shirt in his suitcase. He grabbed his wallet, phone, and keys off the hall table, then opened the door and looked down the hall, taking chase, following her scent.

He felt bonded to her, much more connected than before the love bite. Although he sensed the fear, she was lost, sad, a feather on the wind. He had to find her and make things right.

When he got out to the street, her scent ended abruptly, and the acrid scent of her fear tainted the air. He looked up and down the road, finding no sign of her. Had she gotten a taxi or done something foolish like hitch a ride back home?

He’d drive to her apartment and wait.

As he walked to the parking garage, his phone rang. His heart leaped, hoping it was her.

It was an unknown number.

“Hello? Willa?”

A male voice laughed.

He didn’t have time for anyone right now if it wasn’t his mate. He hung up the phone.

Once in his car, the phone rang again.

“What do you want?”

“What is an alpha without his mate?” the man asked. “I’ll tell you. Weak.”

He put the car back intoparkand froze. That voice…

“Greer.”

“I hope it’s okay if Tyson gave me your cell number. He’s such an impressionable young man, isn’t he? Believes everything he hears.”

“If you hurt him, I’ll kill you.”

“Relax, Xander. Your boy is probably at school fantasizing about joining my pack. He has a real hard-on for utopia. Only it doesn’t exist, does it?”

The sudden realization struck him. “Willa.”

“Ah, catching on there,” Greer said. “She’s a big girl. Put up quite a fight.”

“Don’t you fucking touch her.”
