Magnus wasn’t prepared for the impact it would have on him when, as soft as moonlight, she wrapped herself around him and touched her lips to his.

He tried to remind himself that it wasn’t sexual. That he was trying to do nothing more than revive her.

And spark a mating bond with her…

His bear surged to the surface, roaring his need to claim.

Magnus fought him back, ruthlessly. They were going to do it his way. And his way was any method that he hoped wouldn’t scare her away. As soon as he figured out how to do that, that was.

He needed to grovel and prove to her he was worthy at the same time.

His mind was thoroughly scrambled just by the fleeting touch of her lips against his. His cock was rock-hard and pressed against her belly. He tried not to take advantage of how they were positioned, but she writhed against him, grazing his rigiddick and sending delicious sensations rocketing through his body.

Damn, she was so small. He prayed that she could take him without hurting her. Gritting his teeth, he forced that train of thought to cease. He was getting way ahead of himself.

When she tried to nestle closer again, without drawing any energy from him, he dragged her up his body so their faces were a breath apart in the hopes that it would ignite her survival instinct and get her to take the initiative and take what she needed from him.

She rubbed her chin against his, then her cheek as she turned to graze his lips with hers. He could feel their breath mingling. Their goddamn breath! Even the feel of air expelled from her lungs against his cheek was a transcendent experience. What the hell would it do to him when he finally got inside her?

Shit. He needed to find out. If she didn’t do something soon, his bear was going to riot.

Then his bear roared a warning, shattering the sexual haze.

Chapter Five

Her penitent mate had disappeared and was replaced by a bristling, angry male.

Then she heard it too. Outside. Not too far away, probably at the forest line. The murmuring of voices. Ones that were frighteningly familiar. She wasn’t as weak or as unaware as when they’d caught her before. And she wasn’t alone now.

Magnus lurched from the bed, giving her an unobstructed view of his massive body. As she’d suspected, he was big in every way. She unashamedly eyed his long, thick, heavily veined cock. For a split second, she was more than willing to forget everything but dragging him back to the bed. Or maybe climbing him, since she very much doubted she’d be able to move him. But the twigs cracking as more than one someone crept closer to the house made every other thought fade away.

He grabbed the clothes she’d been wearing earlier and tossed them onto the bed. “Get dressed. Stay here with Ulf.”

She slid off the bed to face him. “I’m coming with you.” She made short work of pulling the clothes on and fixing them so they’d stay put.

“Nari.” It did occur to her that it took him a long moment to stop staring before he remembered he was saying something. Magnus threw on his clothes as he glowered at her. “I need you safe.”

“I’m not letting you go out there alone.” Neither of them moved, and the air throbbed with the mix of tensions. Nari let her gaze roam over him and received a low, rumbling growl in response.

“Are you going to stay here or do I have to fucking chain you up?”

The growl distorted his voice, and she knew his beast was clawing to the surface. And still, she was unafraid. He wouldnever harm her. “I don’t need you to protect me, Magnus.”

“You do. You’re still weak, and you have that thing on your neck. They’re not getting you again.”

“I can handle myself. They caught me off-guard before. And you have to admit that the two of us together have a better chance of dealing with them than just one.” She stood taller. “Besides, I’ve regained some energy.” Apparently getting close to him was enough for her to tap his well of strength. A perk of being mates?

His lip curled back in a snarl, and his muscles rippled as his agitation grew. “We don’t have time to argue.”

This wasn’t the time for game playing, so she said quite plainly, “Then let me come with you.”

He nodded with grim acknowledgment, though he studied her with narrowed eyes as he answered, “Fine.”

“How do we play this?”

“Hang back and just follow my lead.”

Nari rolled her eyes. “That’s not going to happen.” Then she decided to change tactics with her protective bear. “Besides, aren’t I safest with you?”
