For a moment, they simply soaked in the other in silence as the breeze blew over them and the birds started commenting on the scene from overhead.

He was the one to break the tranquility of the moment. “What did you take from him?”

She leaned back to smile at him and opened her trembling hand. In her palm was a carved green stone that looked very much like the ones embedded in the collar on her neck hanging off the leather strap. “Would you like to do the honors?”

The moment felt huge. Momentous. He took the stone and studied it. “What do I do?”

“I don’t know. Try touching it to the collar?”

So, he tried, but nothing happened. “What if I touch thestones in your collar with it?”

“Try.”

He looked at the stone in his hands again. The symbol on it was nearly identical to one of the ones on her neck… Magnus connected the two stones, and the collar fell away.

Smiling, he let his suddenly too-heavy arm fall to his side. His mate was safe.

He closed his eyes and felt the earth come up to cradle his back. Magnus could hear Nari’s voice, though it was coming from so far away that it was distorted. He could barely hear what she was saying. Kiss her?

Gladly. Once he woke up from his much-needed rest.

Only Nari wasn’t letting him sleep. He felt her shaking him. Heard her yelling at him not to go to sleep.

Then he felt her lips on his. The familiar feel and texture of them brought him out of sleep a little. The zing of her kiss woke him further. His bear prodded his mind. They had unfinished business with their mate. He needed to wake up and make all the things he’d been imagining doing with her come true.

Her voice was more urgent now. Worried. Angry. And he could hear barking. Ulf?

Magnus forced his eyes to open. What he saw almost made him wish he hadn’t. The alpha was up and limping toward them. Nari and Ulf faced off with the wolf, using themselves as a protective shield. He pushed his leaden body to obey him, but it wouldn’t move fast enough.

Nari turned to him and said something. She gave him a brilliant smile.

What the hell was she smiling about? Magnus pushed himself onto his knees. He needed to help her. But how, when it took all his energy just to sit up? When he opened his eyes again, a beautiful snowy white fox stood in her place. He blinked againto clear his vision. There was something wrong with his eyes. There had to be. What kind of fox had nine tails?

It was the last thought that crossed his mind before oblivion took him.

Chapter Seven

Magnus was aware of waking in his bed. He knew it by scent and feel. He opened his heavy-lidded eyes to confirm and sighed with relief when he was met with the familiar sight of his bedroom.

What happened?

The past couple of days surely couldn’t have been a dream.

But his body was unmarked as far as he could tell. In fact, he felt better than he ever had. Even with his healing ability, he was sure to have a few aches left over from fighting off the wolves. How did he get back home, cleaned up, and in bed? What happened to the alpha?

Nari?

He bolted upright. Where was Nari?

Panic. Rage. Need. The emotions slammed into him, clashing and mixing. On the opposite end of the spectrum, his bear was despondent.

No. Magnus refused to believe anything had happened to Nari. He had to find her.

Before he knew what he was doing, he was out of bed and halfway down the stairs. That was when he heard it.

Singing.

Not slowing down, he took the rest of the stairs in one step to come to a skidding stop just inside the kitchen.
