“What do you mean?”

“I want to take you somewhere.”

“Where?”

“To my home.”

“Which is?”

“A short ride away.” He grinned.

“Ride?”

“Dragon,” he said. “You ever ridden a dragon?”

She laughed. “What are you talking about?”

“There’s a reason I brought you in here. No one but you can see this.”

“See what?”

“Me. Do this.”

“Ivor.” She touched his jawline, tracing from his ear to his chin. It was a little bristly. “You’re not making sense.”

He swallowed, and for the first time since she’d met him, some of his confidence appeared to slip. “Remember what I said about forgetting reality? Opening your mind to new things?”

“Er, yes.”

“And do you promise to do that?”

“I guess.” She fiddled with her gold bangles, jingling them together.

He studied her intently. Small flames danced in his eyes. “And do you promise not to be afraid?”

“Why would I be afraid?”

“Most people would be, but I’m telling you not to be. I won’t hurt you. I promise.”

“I know.” She took his hand. His skin had heated. It was hot now, as if he had a fever. “I don’t know why I’m so sure. Perhaps it’s because you saved me last night.”

“You believe it because it’s true. I’d lay down my life for my mate, for you.”

She nodded. “Okay, I promise not to be afraid.”

“Good. Just go with it, and when you feel able, climb on and we’ll go to my home. I think you’ll like it.” He grinned and took a step backward, then another and another.

“Ivor, what are you…?” Her words trailed off as his eyes burned brighter, becoming high-intensity flames again.

Then he flung back his head. His arms stretched wide, and he set his feet apart. He let out a roar. The roar ended on aplume of dark smoke.

“What the—?” she muttered.

His fingers were splayed, but as Nisha stared at them, they became webbed. Then his arms grew, merging with his hands. Growing, lengthening, darkening.

She hugged herself, fear shooting into her system. What the hell was going on?

He fell forward, his contorted face blurring and his body wrapping in a thick whorl of white smoke. The scent of burning came.
