“Oh, no need to be so sensitive about it.” She lets out a chuckle that has me wincing. “Your dude wanted to know. You’re not together? She said that he was in some meeting?”

“Yeah, sure,” I mumble absentmindedly. Well, shit. Here I was guessing that he went on a fucking sightseeing trip. Turns out he’s beenworking, attending somemeeting, without me. When I hear the hotel room door close, I quickly end our call and set my phone aside.

“Austin?” Connor’s voice has that usual husky hesitation and the idea that he’s searching for me makes my cock roar back to life. I decide to ignore him, and close my eyes, patiently waiting for him to enter the bathroom. If he dares…

The door opens and I force myself to keep my face as relaxed as possible, while I lay as still as a statue. I feel his presence in the bathroom and the air thickens with silent anticipation. After a bit, he clears his throat and I hear him shuffle closer. I sense a tingling sensation on my face that brings a strange flutter to my stomach. His fingers must be ghosting close to my skin, lingering a breath away from a touch. He whispers, “Are you sleeping?”

“Are you staring?” I taunt and open one eye, catching a glimpse of retreating fingers.

“Of course not.” He might be denying it fiercely, but as he gets up, I realize he’d been crouched in front of me. His cheeks turn deliciously pink and he gives me an indignant look before he mutters “asshole” and turns to leave.

“Oh, be a doll and toss me that towel, will you? Unless you want me to march around naked. In that case, you might as well wait for me in bed.”

He doesn’t turn around, simply grabs a towel and tosses it back to me. I snatch it out of the air before it can fall into the tub and chuckle when he closes the door with a bang.

Oh boy. Only a few hours, but I missed that. I take my time drying myself off and pull on a pair of dark jeans and a light shirt that has rolled-up sleeves, fully exposing the tattoos that cover my forearm–the black V on my wrist that my familymembers all carry stretches up to a bloody knife design. When I leave the bathroom, I find Connor sitting at his desk, laptop in front of him, his glasses placed low on his nose. He seems to be deep in thought. He jumps when he sees me, lets out an annoyed huff, pushes back his glasses, and sends me a scowl. And then he returns his gaze to his screen.

“What, you already forgot that I was here?” I ask.

“No, I didn’t. Here, why don’t you do something useful.” Without looking at me, his finger points at a paper bag that’s sitting next to his laptop on the desk. “I brought you some breakfast. Or considering the time, it’s more like a brunch.”

“To make up for your absent ass this morning?” I scoff, though I grab the bag and open it. Fuck yeah, the moment my eyes see the contents, my mouth waters. I’ve been hungry for these cute and delicious minicroissantsandpains aux chocolat. They make me think of Switzerland and a foreign feeling of nostalgia hits me. I did really like that country. I let out a sigh when my taste buds connect to the sweet taste of the pastry. If it wasn’t for my duties, I would have gladly stayed on this side of the ocean.

Connor dismisses my comment completely, his eyes focusing on the screen in front of him. I let out a tsk which makes him look up, a sneer on his face. “What? Some of us are working.”

“Some of us are working,” I repeat with fake mockery. “And why don’t you enlighten me, princess? After all, you decided to bail on me this morning when you went to yourmeeting.”

“I told you, I’m not your princess. I don’t even like you.”

“Youdon’t likeme? Dude, you’ve gotten off twice in my presence.”

He rushes to get up, cheeks bright red and a furious look on his face. Damn, he looks sexy as fuck like this, especially when he jabs an accusatory finger in my direction.

Come on, princess, bring it on.

“Well, if you were less arrogant, you would have noticed that I don’t enjoy being in your company.” He rakes a frustrated hand through his hair but says nothing. Instead, he sits down again and swallows, as if to regain control of his frustration, much to my disappointment. I decide to give him another little push and place a hand on my heart. “And hereIwas thinking that you actually had a crush on me at college. I mean, did you take pictures ofallthe athletes?”

He snorts. “Can we just get back to work?” This time both hands go through those remarkable, auburn locks and his long fingers linger to rub his scalp. It’s silent for a moment until he continues his typing like nothing has happened. “The meeting went okay.”

“Aaand?”

He continues to tap on his keyboard.

“And nothing.”

I swallow another piece of croissant before I counter, “I believe that the condition for our collaboration was to do this thing together.”

Connor presses his lips in a firm line. “Fine. We’re moving today.”

I narrow my eyes. “Moving? Where are we going?”

“To a safe house.”

“Why?”

Connor rolls his eyes. “To be safe, obviously.”

“Yeah, I got that,” I huff. “But I mean, who decided that? Because I sure as hell didn’t.”
