I swallow my snort, instead walking to take the seat next to him. That’s not exactly how things went, but if it means getting a compliment from Thomas, I’ll gladly bend the truth.

“Besides, it would have been a shame to go over to Paris to take out every single one of those lost boys.” He lets out a chilling chuckle.

This time I do give him a snort. “Yeah, that would be quite bloody.”

Thomas hums and stares at the rolling glass in his hands. “I’m blessed with not one, but two strong sons. You are my oldest boy, and the same fire runs in you that I used to have—you’re wild, passionate, courageous. Tell me something, did you hate coming back from Europe?”

“I’m not sure what you want me to say?”

He lets out a short laugh. “I know you better than you do, you are my son. Were you ever going to admit how much you’d love to live in Europe?”

I just stare at him, flabbergasted. Probably not, to be fair. I never thought that my dreams mattered to Thomas Carrington.

“I thought so,” he hums softly. “That’s why I have a proposition. You move over to Europe and set up an extended Void in Europe.”

“Uhm—” I must look dumb as shit, but right now, my mind’s filled with cotton.

“Ro is stable and has a vision. He can continue running what we have going here. But you can create new opportunities and be happy at the same time. I think this could be beneficial for The Void, and make you happy.”

“Fuck Dad, I’d love to. I mean—”

“Good,” he says, a smile tugged at his lips. “We’ll work it out after we’ve got this mess sorted. Speaking of, where have you been hiding the boy?”

“With Ro and D. back home.”

“Inourcondo,” Kai scowls.

Ignoring his cousin, Thomas nods in approval. “They’ll keep him safe. Has he talked yet?”

“No. He’s too shocked by last night’s events.”

Frankly, so am I. I woke up this morning in an empty bed and with a complete stranger on the couch. I’d already nearly strangled the guy before his wheezing words started to make sense. And gave me the break I needed. A member of thefamilyin our safe house?

“Well, there’s still time left, though it would be nice if we get the information before the others do,” referring to The Business, at tonight’s gathering. I swallow as I watch Owen approach, lean forward, and mumble something into my father’s ear. Thomas’s eyes flash a brief second before he mumbles in reply and we’re both left watching the bodyguard mumble a “Yes, sir,” before he slithers back to a far corner, phone tucked in his hand.

“Getting back to Xavier, Ro’s giving him some time to adjust,” I say. “But if this soft treatment means he stays mute, we’ll have to change our working method.”

Thomas takes another swig from his drink, the ice cubes clinking at the movement. “You do what you have to do. Playtime’s over.” He leans forward, sudden and surprisingly smooth, then takes my wrist and connects our identical tats.

Have you been nice to their guy?”

“Business guy?” I ask weakly, and he gives me a small smile while his fingers brush my painted skin swiftly.

“Is that his name?”

Connor. The single thought of this morning makes me fuming hot with rage and ice cold with misery. Waking up without him wasunexpected, though that really is an understatement.

“Uhm—yes, I believe that I’ve been nice to him,” I say, butdamn, that comes out all wrong. I expect him to see through me and go off, but instead, he just lets out a knowing chuckle that is far from reassuring. “Good, good. She really is a good woman, Angélique. And alliances are the future, don’t you think? It’s important to be able to get along in our line of work, especiallywhen you don’t like the fuckers.” He takes another sip, then eyes the glass as he quips, “You and your cousin will go to Donnelly’s offices now and hand over the proposition in terms of division of territory, distribution, and power.” For a fraction of a beat, my pulse increases rapidly, but then he adds, “You’ll meet with Logan.”

That son of a bitch of a brother.

On cue, Kai joins us at the table, the bottle of vodka in hand, filling up our glasses like he’s some bartender. I don’t mind though. When he wants to give his own glass a top-up, Thomas stops him and I can’t stop myself from making a show of hiding my chuckle behind my full glass. “Not you. You need to drive. Tonight, if all goes according to plan, there’ll be enough booze for all of you. But for now, keep your head where it’s needed, both of you.” He stands, downs his drink, and puts it on the table with a loud thud. “Go to Donnelly, then come straight to the address Vic will text you. She’s waiting to show you around. That’s where the gathering will be held later.” He gives his two sturdy bodyguards a nod and they make their way toward the exit. “I need to go now, but I’ll catch up with you soon. Stay safe, boys.”

As soon as the door closes behind us, Kai tops up his glass and empties it with a large gulp. Letting out a snort, he mumbles, “That’s for telling me what to do,Uncle.” There’s no venom in his words, I know he loves my father too much for that. I chuckle at his little ego outburst, then swallow a large gulp of the spicy and citrus-flavored drink and wipe my mouth with my hand. “All right, you heard the man. Let’s go.” Pulling my duffel around my shoulder, Kai opens the door with a big grin on his face.

“What?” The fresh air lessens the feel of alcohol in my blood.

“You haven’t met my newest baby yet, have you?” He points at a bright red Porsche 911. “Got her in yesterday.”
