Her mouth drops. “Unless you know something I don’t?”

I shake my head. “I think I just need to lie down.” I’m freaking the hell out. But in the sort of way a person freaksout when everything seems too good to be true. But also, really fucking confusing. Why are monsters here?

“Well, make sure you take your vitamins. That future ruler of the War People needs to be strong and feisty. Just like his mother.”

Ruler. War People? My heart is beating a thousand panicked miles per second.

I step out of the kitchen. I need fresh air. I need—

Master nudges my hand and gives me a look. He turns and heads for the front door. I follow him and open it.

We step outside, and the sun is almost completely down, but I can make out several new structures. There’s a barn as tall as a giant and another that’s long and flat with a tin roof.

I walk with Master, noting the sound of howling in the air. The hair on my arms stands straight up. We have monsters at River Wall Manor.

I head straight for the tall barn and look through one of the windows. Inside are Fliers in stalls, chomping down what looks like kibble.

“Master, why are there dragons in the barn?” I point my shaky finger inside.

Master ignores me and heads down the hill, leading me to the spot where Bard’s cabin used to be. Now it’s a lovely home. Two stories with white siding and a porch swing. The shutters are bright blue, and there’s a river rock chimney coming from the roof. It’s too picturesque for words.

Master scratches at the front door, so I open it. He marches straight to the room on the right, where there’s a desk piled high with journals.

This is what he wants me to see. I sit and start flipping through the pages.

Entry #4,052:

I am intrigued by the Snail Woman we tested today. It seems the mucus on her skin is much more resistant to the sun than we thought. Samples from the males show zero to no resistance.

“Is this my house? My office? My work?”

Master nods.

“I’ve been studying monsters?”

Master barks.

I have no words. I can’t understand what would possess me to do that. I hate monsters. They terrify me.

The text goes on about how the discovery with the Snail Woman shows promise for future “events.”

Events?

There’s a laptop on the edge of the desk. I open it and find the passcode window.

Shit. Seriously?I type in “Monsterland,” and it works.

I start searching for records.Monsters. Norfolk. Invasion.

Two million? “Why are there two million results?”

Master trots away. Apparently, he’s lost interest in this conversation, or whatever I’m looking for is right in front of me.

Tons of articles pop up about creatures, science, and the preparations for a massive solar event.

I search my name and find my bio.

It says my maiden name is Lake Norfolk, but my married name is Lake Keiman. I am a monster-biologist, following in the footsteps of the famed Alwar Keimen, ex-king of the War People, philanthropist, scientist.
