I bit my lip. I didn’t expect Mikhail to make any of the appointments. I never expected to see him again. He’d ghosted every single member of my family for the past four months.

And I certainly would never expect anything from him when it came to being a father. This was something I was going to do for me and me alone.

Well. Me and this new life growing inside of me.

“You’re all set,” the technician said. “Are you ready to see your baby?”

WasI ready? No. But it didn’t matter. I was here, and this was happening. “Let’s do this.”

It was hard to make out the image on the screen. It looked like radar — or sonar, maybe — and it was difficult to imagine that I was looking at a picture of something inside of me.

“Oh, my goodness!” the technician exclaimed. “Can you believe it?”

I couldn’t really see anything, but her excitement was infectious. For the first time, I was actually more than just resigned to my fate. I was looking forward to seeing my baby. “Can you tell me what I’m looking at?”

The technician threw her head back and laughed. “You’re looking at triplets, Mama!”

Triplets? Three babies at once?

Ebat.
