“What in the world are you doing here?” she asked. “No! Don’t answer that — you’re here, and that’s all that matters. How long are you in town for?”

“Indefinitely,” I said. “Well, Seattle, actually. My company is looking to purchase an asset.”

Mamachka beamed at me. “That’s wonderful news. Have you seen Sadie yet?”

“He hasn’t,” Jonathan said. “But I’m sure they’ll cross paths and have plenty to talk about. Not our place to share her news.”

“What’s happened?” I asked, suddenly suspicious. “Is she all right?”

“She’s perfectly fine,” Mamachka said. “Just some big changes. That’s all.”

“We’re going to go for a drive,” Jonathan announced abruptly. “I bet by the time we get back Sadie will be home.” He raised an eyebrow. “Then we can all sit down and have a nice, long chat.”

I couldn’t swallow the feeling of unease curdling my stomach, in spite of the delicious smells floating up from the oven. I had a feeling that whatever Sadie’s changes happened to be were for the worse. I wondered what it could be.
