Suddenly I feel his big hands grabbing at me, hooking under my armpits as he lifts me up.

Through come-soaked eyes I look at him as he plants a kiss right on my lips.

“Fuck you make me feel things like no one else can,” he says, his entire body shaking. He doesn’t look, sound, or feel human. “I swear I’ll throw it all away for you. Do anything to be with you.”

“Throw what away?” I ask.

“The life I’ve known. I want to be a better man. I need to…to be yours.”

That afternoon

“That’s a cute one, isn’t it?”

I nod, playing with the Vietnamese Pot-bellied pig.

“All she needs is a good home and care. Somebody to treat her right, and…feed her of course.”

Oh, she will be well-fed. That’s for sure.

“I’ll take her,” I say.

“Well then. Okay,” the guy says. “You want me to wrap her?”

He laughs and I try to do the same, acting human, but my forced emotion comes across as flat as it is.

I hand over the dough, which seems weird that I’m buying another living breathing thing but it is what it is, and I’m giving this girl a new home in which she will definitely be a meaningful member, a very important part from the moment she walks through the door.

And not thirty minutes later I’m doing that. I don’t make eye contact or look in the direction of the new guy who’s doing a stakeout close to my house. At this point, I’d rather they think I don’t know. Better than letting them know I do and then getting into a pissing contest with them which could lead to a warrant…and the end of all of this.

I carry Penelope the Vietnamese Pot-bellied pig into my house and immediately pull the Mexican blanket off of Keith, Bojana already consuming him.

I wince at the sight, something new for me. I’m just thankful Bojana didn’t start taking big gulps of Erica’s ex-teacher while she was blowing me this morning. She would have freaked out, and then probably passed out if she pulled the blanket off.

And I’d be behind bars, forever, instead of here now watching a man get consumed by a snake.

But that’s only the beginning.

Grabbing a clawhammer and a tarp, I move toward the apartments that are unused, the ones which have my other victims buried in the walls.

Tearing at the drywall I see the evidence of my former self, the man I used to be. Quickly I stack the remains of the men on the tarp, the stench damn near overwhelming me as I run the tarp back up to my apartment, open it in front of Penelope and let her get to work.

At first the stench is too much, but then hunger sets in and a pig becomes a pig. It’s a trick that I wasn’t sure was going to work, having seen it in the movieSnatch, but sure enough…it’s real. Leave it to Guy Ritchie to come up with something crazy, but based on fact.

Penelope devours every last bit, including the bones. But then she rolls over and passes out.

My analytical mind does the quick math and I Google how much pigs eat in a day. She just ate what amounts to probably a half-week’s worth of food. She’ll be okay, but at this rate it’s going to take me forever to dispose of what I need to dispose of. And with a detective positioned out front I can’t really just pack everything up and take it to a farm, nor can I suddenly short-term adopt fifty pigs.

I need to be with Erica, and I have to get rid of everything that ties me to my old way of life, which means I need a new plan…and fast.
