If Willow wants to play hardball, that’s fine by me.

I’ll show her the true power and magic that comes with being Maverik Steele.

WILLOW

Ihonk my horn at the crowd of people surrounding the community center, slowly creeping my way into a spot in the parking lot.

What is going on?

Did something happen?

I search my brain, trying to remember if I missed any upcoming community events on my calendar. But none come to mind, and I don’t remember Franny mentioning anything special.

Turning off the engine, I grab my bag and squeeze out of the car, worried I might get trampled by the dense crowd of people surrounding it.

“Is it true?” One woman shouts at me, while another jumps into my face. “Is he here yet?”

“Huh? What are you talking about?” I ask, gripping my bag close to my chest while setting the alarm on my car. Their faces are blank, but their eyes look me up and down, assessing me.

“Come on, I don’t think she’d know anything,” one says, while dragging the other way. “She’s not his type, anyway.”

The air in my lungs freezes.

Shit…

Shit….

Please tell me HE didn’t do what I think he did…

I spring into action, pushing my way through the crowd of people until I get to the front door of the community center. I spot Franny’s wide-eyed gaze on the other side of the glass, silently communicating a major problem and confirming my greatest fear.

The crowd gathered is here for one person.

A certain movie star whose location has been leaked.

Turning to the crowd, I shout at the top of my lungs. “Everyone, back off.”

A small section of people standing around me quiets. “I’m not sure who you think is going to show up here, but I can assure you wherever your news came from—it’s wrong. Please clear the area and go home.”

“So, Maverik Steele isn’t going to be here today?” A man shouts from somewhere to my left. I turn my head and force a smile.

“Of course not,” I reply, trying to keep hold of myself and the situation. “Why would he come here?”

“That’s not what he told his social media following this morning,” one of the women from earlier holds out her phone for me to see. I squint, making out his message and an obvious invitation to his fans.

Maverik Steele

To all my fans, I want to show my gratitude for your constant love and support. Please come and visit me at the Kingman Heights Community Center today. I’ll be there at nine a.m., on the dot!

My jaw drops, and all I can think is…sonofabitch!

Before the crowd can react to my obvious shock, I spin on my feet. Franny flips the lock on the door and pulls me inside, securing it back in place all before I can blink.

“What in the hell is going on?” she asks, jumping as the crowd moves in toward the door, slapping their palms against it and chanting Maverik’s name.

“That bastard,” I whisper, my brain scrambling for words because the truth has left me stunned. “I can’t believe he would do this.”
