“You need to find another girl because I’m not going to give you what you want.” I have to deny him. There’s no space in my life for a man—even if Mason would allow it, and I know he’d give me hell. I can’t forget that—despite the promises of King’s lips that are full, delicious, and tempting. Just looking at him makes my body so hot that I feel like I’m on fire.

“What exactly do you think I want?” he murmurs, quirking a thick, perfectly formed eyebrow.

“I know your type,” I tell him flatly. “You’re looking for an easy lay that’s gullible enough to buy all the lines you throw out. That’s not me.”

Not anymore.

Barely moving, he pushes in the button that starts the elevator moving again. Then he shifts to stand beside me. His crooked grin makes me want to run my tongue over it.

“You’re wrong,” he announces, glancing over at me.

“About what?” I ask, lost. I’m missing having his body close to mine. I miss his warmth and the intoxicating way his breath hit my skin. I touch a palm to my neck, still feeling him there.

What the hell is wrong with me?

“I’m the type of man who likes a woman to be a challenge and you just proved you’re not going to make it easy for me.”

“What?”I squeak.

He pins me with a stare. “You sealed your fate, beautiful.”

Chapter6

King

Riding my bike, I rev it up, catching up to Shelby’s car quickly. I know she’s aware that I’m following her. Of course, I’m not trying to hide it.

The cool night air races past me as I tail her. I fucking love riding my bike. It’s the one place I let go of all the shit that swirls in my mind and just breathe. Tonight is the first time ever that I wish I was somewhere else instead. I want to be in bed with Shelby letting that gorgeous redhead occupy my mind and my body.

As we continue to drive farther away from the hospital, I admit that I’m surprised. I would’ve pegged her for living closer to the rich side of town with a fancy house because she’s a nurse. Instead, we near the edge of town—much closer to Runner’s territory than I’d like. It’s not the best neighborhood either. That and she’s a single woman. I don’t like it at all. It spells trouble with a capital T. The minute we hit the area I begin to worry about her safety out here.

Shelby pulls onto a cracking, concrete driveway of a white, single wide trailer. It’s not in horrible shape but even at this hour, I can tell it needs some work with wooden steps that are swayed and cracked. She’s got a porch light, but it either doesn’t work or she didn’t bother to leave it on. I pull my bike up next to her car and hop off, before she gets out

“Are you really following me?” she huffs while getting out. She reaches in the car, grabbing her purse, and slamming her door, and then stomps over to me, holding a can of pepper spray.

“No, I’m just making sure you’re safe,” I respond with a shrug.

I’ve got a few good inches on her, but damn she’s just the right size. Tall enough, but with curves that last for days and make me want to feel her softness as I push deep into her. Her green eyes sparkle with her temper flared—making my cock twitch in hunger.

“What?” she asks, frowning.

“Babe, its past midnight. You’re a sexy piece of ass that lives alone. You need a man that has your back and it’s going to be me.”

She puffs out a sigh. “I’m a sexy piece of ass?” I can tell she doesn’t like the way I said that, but there’s something else that flickers in her eyes. She’s deciding if I’m lying or not. I don’t know who made her feel like she’s not good enough to please a man, but the shadows in her eyes give her away.

“Oh yeah, beautiful. You’re hot as hell,” I tell her, dragging my gaze up and down her tantalizing frame.

“You think you’re such a sweet talker,” she grumbles but she puts the spray away, so I take that as a good sign.

“I am what I am.” I shrug.

“Well, you can see I’m safe. That means you can go now,” she mutters.

“I don’t know you’re safe until I check out your home and make sure everything is as it should be in here. Also, you need to lock your car and start leaving your porch light on.”

“Are you insane? Like honestly, have you lost your mind?” Shelby asks, looking at me like I’ve grown a second head. “I don’t know you and I’m not letting some stranger into my house while I’m alone. I’m not stupid.”

“Shelby—”
