“That wasn’t cool Mason!” I yell behind me. He makes me jump when he presses against us. My mind immediately drifts to thoughts of us being pressed together like this in my bed.

“I knew Sam was there. You know I would never put you in danger,” he murmurs, planting a soft kiss on the sensitive spot behind my ear.

“Stop being gross,” Thea whines and splashes us. I wiggle to be put down since everyone is still standing, but I keep a hand in Sam’s just in case; reaper or no reaper I don’t want to drown.

“I still love you too, Thea,” I blow her a kiss and she rolls her eyes.

We spend the rest of the afternoon splashing in the ocean and sunbathing on the beach. I love the feeling of normalcy the day brings us. I almost forget about all of the stress in our lives for the moment, just enjoying the food, fun, and my new family.

ChapterSixteen

Luz

Our vacation at the ocean was everything I could have hoped for, but it went by so fast. We didn’t want to stay away too long with Drekavac and his minions still free to leave their layer of the veil.

When we arrive back in the City of Souls, it’s relatively quiet. I was half expecting some sense of the general chaos that seems to follow my arrival to the city. We alldecide to go to our separate rooms to shower, unwind, and prepare for our next orders.

As I step into the shower in my empty room, I realize I hate the feeling of being alone now. Our relationship is still new, and although I’ve slept with two of them, it seems too soon to talk about more permanent sleeping arrangements.

I smile when I walk out of the bathroom and get a good view of my new gaming setup. I haven’t had a chance to actually enjoy it. I log on so I can create a new gamertag and pop in one of my favorite online games.

I notice that Sam left a note with the internet information and his gamertag, so I add him as soon as my console is logged in. I laugh as two more notifications pop up when Mason and Liam add me right away.

Character creation takes me forever but it’s the perfect thing to lose myself in. A girl has to have a good character or it ruins the whole experience. By the time I start the actual game, I’ve received two texts telling me to hurry up. Once I’m past the tutorials that I cringe at redoing, I group up with the guys.

“Your gamertag is DancinEwok? I didn’t take you for a Star Wars fan,” I hear Mason’s voice coming through the headphones.

“You don’t know much about me,” I counter and he grunts in response.

“Aw, look how cute her character is,” Liam chimes in as he pops up in front of me in the game. Of course he made his buff and huge with waves of blond hair.

“I thought we were going to play? Or are you guys afraid of finding out I’m better at this than you?” I joke.

After we get into a few quests and I hold my own, the guys stop making jokes. In all fairness, they’ve all been here a while, so it’s likely that the idea of girl gamers is still new to them. We avoid talking about our pasts, but I would wager to be a Master Reaper it takes years and years of experience. That or they started out different like I did. We have our entire afterlives to learn the details, so for now, we get to just enjoy each other.

“Our girl is a badass at video games, hot as hell, and can kick a demon’s ass. We are some lucky bastards,” Sam says with a chuckle.

“True,” Liam and Mason chime in. Their approval means more to me than I care to admit. I love how open they are with me. I can barely remember my past life, but I don’t think I have ever felt the same level of love and acceptance that I get from them.

“We need to get Thea on board,” Mason says and I immediately agree.

“I need to add color to her room too. I’ve added a bit, but not enough,” I say with afrown, realizing I’ve neglected Thea a bit in all the chaos.

“Do you guys hear that?” I ask, voice tense. Despite the headset, I hear an odd screeching coming from the hallway. If it wasn’t for the fact we are safe in the City of Souls, I would swear that it sounds like the demons.

“Is something wrong, Luz?” Sam is on high alert at just the sound of my tension. I just whisper for them to hush for a second as I take off my headset, slowly walking to the door to listen. The hallway is silent for the moment, but I’m not convinced. I call Thea quickly.

“Thea, stay in your room,” I say as soon as she picks up her phone. Just knowing she’s safe has me breathing a little easier.

“Luz, I heard them,” she whispers into the phone. “I’m already hiding. Be safe.” My relief dies as I process her words.

“You too. I love you, Thea,” I whisper before grabbing my headset. “Demons breached the city. They’re outside our rooms.”

“Impossible!” Sam roars, not calling me a liar, but appalled at the situation. I throw the headset down and grab my dagger off of my side table. Not ready to rush out headfirst into an unknown situation, I crouch down next to my door, just in case they come in after me.

My heart pounds in my chest as I stay in position, listening to their haunting, keening cries. I close off my emotions, refusing to dwell in my fear, even as it threatens to consume me whole. Another screech rolls through the hallway, followed by a loud thud and something shattering. A fresh surge of icy fear pulses through my veins.

I shouldn’t be surprised that Drekavac is sending his minions for me. When he held us captive he made it apparent he’ll never let me go. And since our return, we have yet to find something to bind him to his realm.
