“It got me thinking.” My words are soft and slow as I gauge his reaction. “About Blair.”

He doesn’t outwardly react so I continue.

“About why she took so long to tell you that she carried your child. I would expect her to tell you immediately.”

Killian swipes his fork over his plate before he shrugs.

“I haven’t… exactly ever given her an opportunity and I did threaten to kill her,” he admits. “Maybe she was just too scared. I can’t imagine I gave her the safest impression to bring a child to me.”

Huh.

Is he softening on Blair faster?

Perhaps the thought of a child is overruling the fact that it’sBlair. Killian is placing guilt on his shoulders easier than I thought, why? Just because a child is involved?

I study his face as he finishes his meal, trying to reason his thought process with my own. To be a team, we need to work together although I’m not entirely convinced Blair would hold back for that reason. If anything she surely would have vindictively dangled the news while denying him access.

“Perhaps,” I reply finally. “When children are involved, people are much more cautious. If it is true… have you thought about how you want to move forward?”

I abandon the last of my pasta as my heart picks up its pace, filling the space any hunger had left behind. Does Killian want the child? Will he want Blair in our lives? I don’t want to play second fiddle toanyonebut especially not her.

“What do you want to do?” Killian turns to me, turning his palm over underneath my hand and threading our fingers together. My heart stops.

Me? He’s asking me?

“What?”

“Cara,” Killian says and there’s a warmth in his eyes I haven’t seen before. It’s small, like a muted flame flickering into life. “You’re my wife. And… mydesirefor a child is something we’ve only spoken about briefly around what our duty requires of us. So if I do have a child with Blair… I want us to figure it out together.”

The topic of children brings out acompletelydifferent side to Killian, although I shouldn’t be surprised. I’ve seen him soften with Emilia countless times, the clues were there. Gripping his hand back, my heart leaps into my throat and heat flushes my cheeks.

“If you have a child, I will welcome him or her,” I say softly, “It’s important to you, so it’s important to me. That child can’t be held to the same low standard as Blair.”

Killian breaks into a bright smile, one that lasts only a few seconds but it warms my heart with such force that I’m certain it’ll pound right out of my chest.

“Of course, I still want one of our own,” I tease. Not just as a duty. We’re stronger together and family is binding, especially in this life.

All other thoughts vanish from my mind as Killian surges off his stool and into me, clashing our mouths together in a sudden, hard kiss that trembles through my jaw.

I laugh against his lips, winding my arms around his neck as he kisses me hard and deep, leaving me breathless when he breaks away but he remains in my space, sharing my air.

“Fuck yeah,” he smirks. The bubble oflighthas faded from his eyes but I know it still exists in his heart. I thread his hair through my fingers and pepper kisses against his mouth, along his jaw.

“Making the baby is half the fun,” I whisper and Killian groans so deeply it vibrates through my chest. He clutches at my thighs, scooping me from the stool and setting me on the counter, hurriedly pushing the discarded dishes away with a clatter.

Food is forgotten.

I spread my thighs, forcing my dress to ride up as Killian steps between them, kissing me frantically. His hands fall warm to my waist and my nails graze lightly down his neck to reach his shirt. I want itoff.

Not where I expected the conversation to take us but I’m not complaining.

Then Killian’s phone sings into life. Once. twice.

He kisses me hard, and I try to ignore it but it sings once more and Killian nips sharply at my lower lip before he pulls away. I sit there, breathless and my core aching as Killian answers the phone.

“What?” he barks. I chew on my lip, chasing the sensation of him kissing me as a voice buzzes so low I can’t make anything out.

“Fuck. I’ll be right there.”
