“Cara?” Sienna's tone pulls me from my thought explosion; she must have been talking and I was miles away.

“Sorry, sorry. My mind is… I don’t sleep well when he’s not here,” I admit and it’s a half-truth. The confession softens the lines on her face and she smiles, almost wistful.

“I’m the same when Dante and I are apart. It’s strange, I never saw myself as someone attached to something as simple as that but an empty bed can be daunting when you’re so used to the warmth.” She tucks her hair behind one ear and drains her cup, setting it down. The tinkle of the china strikes me as too loud. “Anyway, I was saying we will look into your friends but they are low on the list given their outsider status.”

“Yeah…” I murmur in agreement and cast a glance at my own cooling cup.

Do I tell Sienna?

Killian hasn’t mentioned Blair to them, as far as I know. It could pull that secret out into the open. Or maybe they know and it would do no harm.

“If I—,” I begin and the words catch in my throat. “If I think of anyone else, or anything else, you’ll be the first to know.”

“I appreciate that.” Sienna clasps her hands together. “Dante is going to send someone to the house, to take a look around in case the poison came from a food delivery or something. You haven’t gotten sick so it may have been a single dose but we don’t want to take any risks. And as I said, looking into Kimmy and Sadie is just as a precaution so you don’t have to avoid them if you need company.”

“Makes sense.” I know in my heart that they have nothing to do with this.

If it’s anyone, it’s Blair.

But why? And how?

A soft tune plays suddenly from Sienna’s waist and she tugs out her phone, her brow furrowing as she takes in something I assume to be important before she slides from her stool and straightens her suit.

“Thank you for seeing me Cara, and please take care of yourself.” A strong smile slips onto her face but I can’t help but think it’s more for her benefit than my own. Killian being out of the picture even for a day must be a struggle.

“I will. And thank you… for coming to see me.”

Sienna grasps my arms and squeezes warmly, pulling me in to press a kiss to my cheek. Her floral perfume dances over my nose and I breathe her in before she departs and I lead her to the front door.

“Remember,” she says as she shrugs on her coat. “You think of anything, no matter how small, it could be important.”

“I will, thank you, Sienna.”

She leaves as quickly as she came and silence falls in the house once more.

Only this time my thudding heart fills the silence and my thoughts run so fiercely I’m sure someone outside must be able to hear them.

I thought Blair wanted a life with Killian. She’s trying to keep him in her life, not kill him!

Pacing into the lounge, I tug the cardigan tighter around my body and try to piece it all together. It’s like trying to do a puzzle without the picture box for reference, something must be missing.

Something like—-

Another knock at the door interrupts me and heat splashes across my shoulders.

Did Sienna forget something?

I cast an eye around, not spotting anything before I stride to the door and pull it open, expecting to see Sienna standing there with the answers in her hands.

It’s not her.

“Killian! What… what are you doing here?!”

He stands there, leaning slightly to his left and though still pale, he’s a lot healthier than the last time I was allowed to see him.

“I just couldn’t stay away,” he rumbles in a voice so deep that tingles shoot through my body and I can’t fight the smile that spreads across my face as I take his hand and drag him inside.

“Is it even safe for you to be out of the hospital? Dante told me at least another four days.”
