“Sadie!” I snap, “this is serious! I could be—!” The word catches in my throat and Sadie’s face softens, sympathy replacing the teasing glint in her eye.

“I know, I’m sorry. Look… it’s not rocket science but better safe than sorry huh?”

She thrusts the bag at me and I snatch it, hurrying into the bathroom and immediately rummaging through the contents. Sadie’s bought four different tests, all different brands and as my heart pounds, it swells slightly in appreciation. She does think of everything.

“So,” Sadie calls from the bedroom as I rip open a box, “have you done anything about Blair yet?”

“Done anything?” I ask as I drop my panties, aim at a stick and close my eyes.

“Yeah, about her severe lack of pregnancy body,” Sadie clarifies.

She better not be poking around our room!

“Uhm…” It’s difficult to talk and pee on a stick, never mind four. “Not yet. Things have been… crazy with Killian’s uh— allergic reaction and this family stuff.”

“Of course.” Sadie hums slightly before she appears in the doorway and leans against the frame. Her smile is soft and her brow creases as I switch out sticks.

“Are you okay?” Her voice is soft as she idly plays with one of the tiers attached to her hoody, her eyes creased as she watches me.

“What?” I hear her question but it doesn’t resonate until I’ve laid all four sticks out on the countertop and pulled my panties back up. “Am I okay?”

“Yeah.”

“Uh… I don’t know.” Nausea twists in my gut once more as I eye the sticks and Sadie appears at my elbow, sliding her phone onto the counter with a two-minute timer ticking away on the screen.

“You want kids with Killian though, right?” Sadie prompts, “I thought you did?”

“I do,” I nod quickly, my eyes locked on the timer as it sluggishly ticks down. “I definitely do.” The thought has previously warmed me. But now? I force a deep breath. “What if it looks like I’m trying to compete? To pull focus from his son with Blair? The timing couldn’t be worse.”

Sadie scoffs sharply. “If that poor child even exists. And regardless, it doesn’t look like that at all. Killian’s a grown man, he has to know a child with you would be on the cards especially since you can’t keep your hands off one another.”

“Maybe…” Would Sadie’s advice be the same if she knew the truth? If she knew the inner workings of the Mafia and the responsibility I carry to produce an heir for the Irish family?

30 seconds.

Sadie’s warm hand slides around my waist, chasing away a chill that has risen from the cold tiles against my bare feet and still my heart punches in my chest with each passing second.

“I’ve seen the way he looks at you,” she continues. “I can’t imagine anything would make him look at you with anything other than utter adoration.”

Fifteen seconds.

I can’t speak. I don’t trust my tongue enough and my mind runs with a hundred different scenarios, too many possibilities like flash cards springing up in my head.

Then two pink lines appear on the window of the first test. My heart leaps under my tongue. Two lines on the second test. Two on the third and the fourth, an electronic tube, flashes a picture of a cute pixel baby.

Pregnant.

My world stills. The silence is deafening as a roaring slowly begins to fill my ears and my stomach churns violently. My knees tremble and Sadie guides me to the toilet, lowering me down and she crouches next to me. Her hands come to rest on my bare knees and she stares up at me.

“You’re pregnant,” she smiles, her eyes darting back and forth as she studies me.

Pregnant. I’m pregnant. With Killian’s baby.

My heart soars for a moment and tears flood into my eyes, blurring the world as a smile pulls at my lips, impossible to resist. Sadie beams in turn and her hands squeeze gently.

“Good news?”

“Y-Yeah,” I stammer softly, “it feels like it.” A soft chuckle escapes me and I sniff around the tears as something inside me inflates within my chest, filling it to near bursting point.
