“Cara, baby, what is it?”

“Look!” She holds her phone up and I run closer, sliding onto the bed and taking the device.

“What is this?”

“Isn’t that where you were supposed to meet Blair for dinner?” Cara asks but her voice fades in my ears slightly.

The article on Cara’s phone talks about an explosion that ripped through a restaurant last night, killing multiple occupants and leaving tens if not more injured.

Cara’s right, that is where I was supposed to meet Blair last night.

“Shit.”

My heart sinks sharply and heat floods through my veins as I scan the article looking for names. Each photo flicks past as I search for any kind of hint or detail that could indicate who has died.

Blair was there.

And she’s not answering her phone.

What the fuck, this was supposed to be over?

“Killian,” Cara begins cautiously, “I thought we were at peace with the Russians? That bombings and… and things like this were supposed to be over?”

“We are,” I reply tightly and Cara’s phone creaks slightly in my grip. “They are. This might not be them.”

Even as the words leave my lips, I don’t believe them and I don’t expect Cara to either. I stare at the phone until my eyes blur as one horrible thought worms its way around my mind and stays there.

Blair could be dead. She was there, I was supposed to be there.

Who the fuck is still trying to kill me?!

Cara’s hand appears on my wrist, her touch warm and yet somehow too restricting right now. I pull away, tossing her phone back to her and moving to stand as I run the details through my mind.

“Killian, talk to me,” Cara presses, scooting to the edge of the bed.

I turn to her and for a moment, I want to. But somehow, telling her that Blair was involved with the Russians feels like too much to put on her shoulders now that she has a baby to think about.

I can’t tell her, not until I know all the details.

“I have to go,” I state as my phone complains about the battery once more. “I have to tell Dante and Sienna about this.”

“But what about Samuel?”

Cara’s question catches me off guard and I pause, halfway bent over to pick up my jeans.

“What?”

“Killian, if Blair was there and she’s— that means Samuel, your son, is all alone!”

CARA

Killian remains frozen in place for so long that I’m not sure he even heard me.

“Killian,” I begin again. He snaps into life then, gathering his clothes from the floor and darting towards me to press a brief, hard kiss to my lips.

“Sienna will know what to do,” he says in a rush. “Stay here, don’t go anywhere. I’ll be back as soon as I can!”
