“Yes. Really. I’m such an idiot.”

“Oh, don’t cry, lass.”

I didn’t know what to do. So I did the only thing I could think of—step forward, wrap her in my arms, and hold her against my chest as she cried.

“Who?” I mostly growled.

She shook her head. “I don’t want to say.”

“Who?” I insisted.

“Trick.”

I stiffened. “Patrick, Trick? Patrick Huston?”

My teammate had knocked up my sister-in-law? She had to be kidding me.

“What? I didn’t know the two of you were—”

“We weren’t. And we aren’t. And I don’t know if I’m going to tell him, so please don’t mention it. I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

“You... you had a one-night stand with Trick?”

“Yes. I just wanted to not be the virgin anymore. And we were at a party at Big Deck’s house, and everyone was drinking, and Trick was so sweet. We danced, and he kissed me, then I invited him home for another drink. He came with me all the way out here, and then one thing led to another and...”

“I’m going to kill him.”

“No, don’t kill him.”

“He didn’t even use protection. The bleeding idiot.”

“He did. It broke. And I was on the pill, so I told him it would be fine. Except I don’t know what happened. It wasn’t supposed to happen, but it happened. God, I’m so stupid.”

“No, you’re not stupid. Things like this happen. It’ll be all right. We’ll take care of you.”

She broke out of my hold. “I don’t want you to take care of me. Everyone’s been taking care of me my whole life. I’m the little sister who never gets anything right. Who has to rely on her big sisters to take care of her. I will figure this out. But you can’t tell anyone.”

“Scarlett, this isn’t something I can keep from Becca.”

She sighed. “So you’re that guy? The good guy now? I thought you were the liar. The cocky asshole. Just when I need you to be a dick, you grow a conscience.”

“Becca deserves to know.”

“No, she doesn’t. It’s my decision who to tell and when to tell them.”

She had a point. I was not involved in the least. She was the one who should tell whoever she wanted.

“You don’t have to do this by yourself. You should tell your sister. She won’t shame you. It could have just as easily been her.”

That thought sent a thrill through me. She stared at me. Her face was so like her sister’s, but there was fear in her eyes, and her lower lip trembled. Then she went a little green, and I backed away as fast as possible as she ran for the toilet.

There must have been something on the slick floor because my foot slipped out from under me, and as I heard her emptying the contents of her stomach once more, I twisted and reached to grab hold of the counter.

Something in my knee snapped. I fell to the ground. Pain. Fucking pain I was all too acquainted with radiated from my knee straight through to my heart.

“Fucking hell,” I groaned, sitting up and tentatively touching my knee.

I was going to be sick right along with Scarlett. I tried to stand, but it hurt too badly.
