My eyes narrowed. “When I say I know everything, I meaneverything,” I said. “I know what you did to Lindsay, and I know what you did to Laney, too.”

His eyes widened. “What the hell are you talkingabout?”

“Lindsay found out about the Network, so you killed her, didn’t you? Or you got one of your associates to kill her. Either way, it’s your fault she’s gone,” I said, hands curling into tight fists. “As for Laney… you convinced her father to sell her to Peter Elton when she was only fourteen. Did you really think I’d let any of that shit go once I foundout?”

Dad’s face twisted into an incredulous expression. “That’s nottrue.”

“Stop fuckinglying.”

He raised a hand. “Look, I admit, I may have introduced Laney’s fatherto—”

The agent cut him off again, looking exasperated. “Mr. Connery, once again, I have to advise you not to speak until you have a lawyerpresent.”

Dad narrowed his eyes at her. “I can say whatever the hell I want,” hehissed.

“No, you can’t. You need to come with us right now.” The other agent held up the cuffs. “What’s it gonna be? Easy way or hardway?”

“Just let me speak to my son first! Please. All I need is a minute.” My father’s eyes were wild with panic now, and his face had turned bone-white.

The agents exchanged glances. Then one of them shrugged. “It’s your funeral,” he said. “You know all of this can be used against you incourt.”

Dad ignored them and turned back to me, palms in the air. “Hunter, I swear. I may have introduced Jamie Collins to Peter Elton and sorted out a deal there, but that’s it. I didn’t hurt Lindsay! No one from the Network did either. She committed suicide, and you need to acceptthat.”

“Bullshit.”

“It’s the truth, son. Lindsay had no idea about any of it. I swear,” he said, shaking his head. “And even if she knew everything, I would never, everhurther!”

I snorted. “Sure.”

Dad glanced back at the agents and the police officer. “You’re not arresting me on suspicion of murder, are you?” he askedstiffly.

They all shook their heads. “No, but as we’ve already stated multiple times, you need to stop talking,” one of them said. “You’re only incriminating yourself further with every word you say, and I can also tell you that wewillbe opening another case in regard to the disappearance of Vera Everett and the death of your daughter. So if I were you, I’d shut my mouth right aboutnow.”

Dad’s eyes widened again. “Vera Everett?” he said, voice rising in pitch. “You mean that girl who went missing twenty-five yearsago?”

“We know she was involved in your secret society, Dad,” I said. “I’m guessing she threatened to expose you, so you got rid ofher.”

“She vanished on a camping trip! It was some sort of accident!” he said, frantically shaking his head. “Jesus, this is a fucking set-up!”

“It’s not a set-up, Charles,” the male agent said, stepping forward to grab his arms. He pulled them behind his back. “Right now, you’re under arrest for the sex trafficking charges, and that’s why we’re taking you in.” He paused to snap the cuffs around his wrists. “We gave you the chance to do it the easy way, but now you’ve given us no choice. Let’sgo.”

“No!” Dad shouted. “You need to listen tome!”

The agents started dragging him across the hall with the help of the police officer. Despite the cuffs pinning his arms behind his back, he fought them with every ounce of strength he had, making the journey to the door slow andpainful.

“Listen to me, Hunter!” he shouted over his shoulder. “We never killed anyone! I swear! If a girl ever crossed us, we’d ruin her life. I admit that. But nothingelse!”

I folded my arms and watched him go with a coldsneer.

He kept yelling back at me. “You have to believe me about your sister!” he said. “I never touched a hair on her head! I lovedher!”

He sounded sincere, but I couldn’t trust a word hesaid.

Neveragain.

When he was finally gone, I rejoined Laney and Adam on the staircaselanding.

“It’s over,” Laney said with a bright grin, hugging me and my brother in turn. “I can’t believe it’s actuallyover!”
