“I didn’t run over here about your lights.” His words are low and slow.

“No?” I’m frozen in his penetrating gaze.

"I caught sight of you in the window, and I couldn't take my eyes off you." His hands dip lower to the sloping curve of my ass. Not too low, but enough to follow his intention. "Your curves and outfit drive me crazy. I've wanted to say that from the first time I saw you."

“Why didn’t you?” I finger the hair above the collar of his shirt. It’s as thick and inviting as I knew it would be. I lean closer.

“I knew I’d want to do this, too.”

His lips brush against mine, and everything inside me overflows with heat and desire.

Sophie hums her approval. The kiss is tentative, soft and full of questions we'll find answers to later. For now, I'll take each nibble she allows me.

When she glides the tip of her tongue over the swell of my lip, my skin puckers, sending vibrating flares to every nerve ending in my body. My heart explodes, crashing against my breastbone at record speed.

Her breasts press into my chest when she arches into me. My manhood takes note, thickening to high alert. My body’s a hair trigger shy of swooping her up and–

The door chimes, and we both startle. Sophie flinches and turns away from the door to gather herself.

“Pardon the interruption.” Parker, from the Nerdy Bookworm, steps inside. Her eyes shine bright as she clears her throat. Her smirk widens into a knowing grin.Told you, she silently mouths her satisfaction. “I thought I saw you sprint in here earlier. Customers are looking for you, Sebastian.” She pauses, “Hey, Sophie.”

“Hey, Parker. We were just–” Sophie wavers for a moment, caught off guard. She dabs at the corners of her mouth with her fingertips, then visibly snaps to. A thread of nervousness causes her voice to shake. “We were just discussing the Festival of Lights. Are you ready with your plan this year?”

“It looks like yourdiscussionis proceeding along quite well.” Parker can’t help herself. She elbows me and snickers again.

“Parker,” I admonish her sharply under my breath.

My knee-jerk reaction for her to cut it out goes unnoticed or ignored. Either way, she’s clearly amused and not the least bit shy about it.

“I put Ginger in charge of the window this year. She’ll do anything to stay busy.” Parker rolls her eyes. “Killian keeps trying to set her up with a guy from his work. She wants no part of it. He can’t get it through his thick skull that she doesn’t need big brother’s stamp of approval.”

“Oh, wow. Poor Ginger.” Sophie stifles a snicker. “My brother would rather lock me in a convent than admit I’m sexually...” Her eyes widen, and her cheeks tinge pink when she meets my gaze. “Active. Actively dating. I mean, not currently, but not opposed.”

Sophie takes a step back, clearly addled.

“I’ve got some things to do in the back.” Her eyes dart nervously to Parker and then to me. “Thanks for stopping in. See you later.”

I hate to keep customers waiting a moment longer, but it’s now or never.

"Meet you after work to start our scavenger hunt?" I'm anxious, hoping she'll say yes, and equally perturbed I have to do this in Parker's presence.

Sophie slows as she rounds the ice cream counter. She spins on one foot with a bounce and breathes in a long breath that springs into a smile. “I’m looking forward to it. Five-fifteenish?”

“I’ll be here with bells on.”

Parker loops her arm through mine as we exit Brain Freeze. “Nicely done, stud.” She clucks her tongue. “I knew you two would hit it off. I’m just surprised it took you this long.”

I stall on the sidewalk and tug Parker’s smug ass to a halt.

“You’re incorrigible, you know that?”

“I try.” She tilts her head and bats her lashes, flashing me her cherubic, knowing grin.

Parker’s everyone’s best friend, little sister, and girl next door. She knows everything about everyone. My heart beats heavily as a knot rises in my throat.
