Mark smiled. “I’m not going to because Callum is still nearby, but I need you to know that I want to kiss the shit out of you right now.”

She blushed, punching buttons into the computer before looking over to make sure the machine was following her instructions. “Thank you for not, though I would enjoy it. It’s not that I want to keep you a secret, I just—”

“You don’t have to explain,” he said gently. “I understand. Focus on what you’re doing. The rest of it can come later.”

She nodded and went back to work, dispatching a nurse with the mixture she’d just created. Once again, it didn’t work, but Sarah wasn’t getting worse. Three samples later, her vitals rose out of danger.

“I think this is it,” Jenna said. “I think this will work. We’ll have to monitor her and keep giving her this compound, and I’ll tweak it if we need to, but if it’s working, she should be awake within the hour.”

Mark made sure the coast was clear before he pulled Jenna into a closet and kissed her thoroughly. It was hot, hard, and way too brief, but they were both smiling when they emerged, ready to monitor and wait.

Chapter 15

Mark was watching with Jenna when the robot woke up.

Not a robot…Sarah. She was a person now, no longer being controlled by Joaquin or anyone else.

She was confused and scared, but she was alive, and that was the important thing. Sheer relief shone in Jenna’s eyes as she looked at Sarah from the doorway, then she excused herself to go back to the lab to run more tests and make notes for the doctors and nurses.

Mark and Callum stayed. Sarah needed to be questioned as soon as possible.

“When can I question her?” Callum asked a doctor as he stepped out of the room.

The doctor shook his head. “Not for a while. She’s awake, but she’s confused and scared.”

“We won’t do anything to cause her undue distress,” Mark reassured the doctor. “But she may know things that are vital to national security.”

“Right now, that young woman can’t even remember her name, so I’m pretty sure details of national security are going to be beyond her grasp. Let us get her more stable and comfortable, then we can look into questioning. Her health is the most important thing.”

Callum’s jaw clenched. “How long do you think we’re talking about?”

The doctor shook his head. “At least six hours. Twelve would be better.”

They both nodded at the man, and he left.

Callum leaned back against the wall. “I can’t afford to be away from my undercover assignment for another six to twelve hours. I’m risking too much just by being here now.”

“Then go. I’ll question Sarah as soon as it’s possible. I’m closer to the situation anyway. I’ll report any actionable intel immediately.”

Callum still looked torn. And exhausted. He ran a hand through his already tousled hair. “You’re doing a lot as it is, man. And we’re not even paying you.”

“Ian is paying me, so don’t worry about that. You can’t do it all, Callum. You being undercover probably does a lot more toward us shutting Joaquin down than sitting in this hospital does. I’ll get you the info you need.”

“If there’s any to get,” Callum responded. “Like Jenna said, Joaquin might have been smart enough to use drugs on his victims that affect their memory.”

Mark reached up and squeezed Callum’s shoulders. “Whatever intel there is to get from Sarah, I’ll get it. You get back to where you’re needed.”

For a second, it looked like Callum might argue, but then he nodded. “Okay. Thank you. I wouldn’t trust this to just anyone.”

“I won’t let you down.”

Mark spent most of the day in the lab with Jenna. They were both carefully monitoring Sarah’s progress. Mark could feel weariness, compounding the effects of his peripheral neuropathy, pulling at him, but he ignored it.

Jenna was exhausted also. “Damn it, this latest compound didn’t have the desired result either. Honestly, Sarah’s memory might be gone for good.”

He came up behind her and rubbed her shoulders. “It’s okay. She’s alive, awake, and stable.”
