She adjusted her backpack on her shoulders, and I reached for her hand, lacing my fingers through hers as we walked to my car.

As much as I wanted the weekend to be just us, it wasn't. I was inundated with phone calls as the main players were working on a plea deal. There were more reporter calls and calls from the other companies involved in the consortium. Meanwhile, I finally set in motion concrete plans to move to Boston. Nothing would be public, not for now. My lease was up on this condo in six months, which meant I could be moving up to Boston in the fall, my favorite time of the year.

“What do you think about a weekend in Haven’s Bay soon?” I asked as we lay in the darkness later that night.

I had just gotten my breath back after Jane and I both went flying. With all the tumult of late, I craved the touchstone of Haven’s Bay. I needed it with Jane.

“That sounds perfect. Where should we stay?”

“My family's place.”

“Is that a thing we can do whenever? Do you need to check with your siblings?”

“I guess I'll let them know I'm going, but that's about it.”

I could feel the curve of her smile against my shoulder where her head rested. She pressed a kiss to my collarbone, and warmth radiated in spirals from that point.

“Okay, I'll take a weekend in Haven’s Bay anytime,” she whispered.

Jane

“No, you can't come up this weekend,” Ian said into the phone.

I snorted into my coffee cup as I lifted it to take a swallow. Ian looked up from where he was talking on his phone to Thea.

“Next weekend is fine. This weekend is out of the question.”

“Are you already there?” Thea’s reply carried to me.

“Yes, we are, and we'd like the house to ourselves, please,” he said.

Rather firmly, I thought.

“It's not even Christmas yet for three weeks. Why are you there now?” Thea pressed.

When I glanced askance at Ian, I realized he had the phone on speaker.

“Oh, my god,” he muttered. “Because this is the weekend that we came up last year.”

“Oh, all right,” my friend said with a dramatic sigh. “I'll be there next weekend. If you're still there, you'll have extra company.”

“Love you, Thea!” I called.

“Same,” she replied in return.

“Bye, sis, talk to you soon.”

Ian hung up and looked across the table at me. “I should’ve thought to warn all of my siblings away.”

“Nobody else is coming. It's not Christmas for three weeks as Thea just pointed out.”

“We're not going to worry about it this weekend,” he said.

He leaned across the table, catching my free hand in his. “Where do you want to have dinner tonight?”

“Emile’s? They do have the best food in town.”
