Page 170 of Chasing Hadley

While I’m not sure what Hadley’s mom looked like, I also saw the woman in the SUV, and she looked very similar to the woman in the photo that was in the file my dad gave me this morning. The woman we’re supposed to be robbing tonight.

What that means, I don’t have a clue. It has me extremely worried, though. Not only about Hadley but about the heist tonight. What if the woman caught on to what we’re supposed to do? Could that be why she’s here?

I need to inform my father, but I worry he’ll dismiss my concern. And then what? Rhyland and I just go through with the plan tonight and hope we don’t get caught?

Dammit, I need to figure out a way to get us out of this somehow, or else we might end up in jail.

Or worse.

HADLEY

I’m havinga hard time convincing myself that I didn’t see my mother in that SUV, and I’m starting to question my sanity. What if I am insane? I mean, I do blackout sometimes and can’t remember anything about my mom’s death.

What if, on top of me forgetting some of my memories, I’m also starting to hallucinate?

Needless to say, I’m pretty uneasy while I eat lunch with Blaise and Rhyland.

We barely talk, which Rhyland remarks about several times, because he apparently thinks I’m not the type of girl who can keep her mouth shut.

He’s probably right, but that doesn’t turn me into Miss Chatty.

“Are you okay?” Blaise asks as we hike across the parking lot of the diner, heading toward his SUV.

I nod, my gaze sweeping the parking lot as I search for that SUV I saw earlier. Deep down, I know my mom wasn’t really in that vehicle, but part of me is being stupidly naïve. Or, completely insane.

Blaise swings in front of me, causing me to skitter to a halt. Then he lowers his head and levels his gaze with mine. “What’s up? You seem like you’re stuck in your own head or something?”

“I was just thinking about the bags,” I lie, tucking strands of hair behind my ears. “I wish I could check if they’re there right now, because it’s going to drive me crazy until I know.”

Worry forms in lines between his brows. “Had, I don’t think that’s such a good idea—”

I cover his mouth with my hand. “I didn’t say I was going to look for them now. Just that I want to. I’ll wait and go before dawn.”

He gets this funny look in his eyes that confuses the hell out of me. Then he kisses the palm of my hand.

I jerk back. “What the heck was that for?”

His eyes sparkle in the sunlight, and so does his smile.

Good God, he’s gorgeous. He really is.

I hastily dropkick that thought from my head.

“Why did you do that?”

He gives me an innocent look. “Do what?”

I give him a dirty look. “You know what.”

He chuckles. “I’m sorry, but I couldn’t help it. Your hand was right there and I …” He shrugs, swallowing hard, his mood shifting in the snap of a finger.

I try to scowl at him, but it’s not easy. “Don’t do it again. No kissing me ever without my permission, got it? And that includes hand kissing.”

He smashes his lips together, a funny look crossing his face. “Yes, boss.”

I eye him over. “What’s that look for?”
