“He won’t,” Alex promises. “I’m only here to pick up someone. I’ll be in and out in ten minutes tops. Well, as long as you can point me in the direction of the person I’m looking for.”

The guy wavers. “Who are you looking for?”

“Her name’s Payton. She’s a sophomore.” Alex nods his head in my direction. “She’s this lovely girl’s little sister.”

The guy’s gaze slides to me, and he gives me a long once-over before meeting my gaze. Something dark flashes in his eyes, something I can’t quite decipher, but it makes a chill trickle down my spine.

I’ve seen that look before …

Somewhere …

A shadow of a memory tugs at my mind.

Eyes …

Watching me …

I feel sick …

I blink, suddenly feeling very cold even though the wind has settled.

What the hell kind of memory was that?

The guy wets his lips with his tongue. “What’s your name, beautiful?”

Oh my God, is he effing kidding me?

My lips part with a very colorful comeback, but Alex nudges me in the side before I can say anything.

I glare at him, but he ignores me.

“All you need to know is she’s Payton’s sister,” Alex replies, inching closer to me.

The guy’s gaze scrolls up my body again. “Is she yours?”

My tongue burns to put this asshole in his place, just like my fist longs to get acquainted with his jaw. I don’t give a shit if my hand hurts right now. I’ll deal with the pain if it means getting to hit this douchebag. But Alex discreetly reaches over and clutches my hand.

“She’s Blaise’s actually.” His hold on my hand tightens as I glare at him. “You know, my father’s oldest son and heir to his business.”

It takes all of my effort for my jaw not to drop, but holy hell, I can’t believe what I’m hearing. Blaise is the heir to August’s business? Since when? Because he’s always made it sound like he wants nothing to do with his father or his business.

And why the hell is Alex acting like I belong to Blaise? Because I so don’t.

The guy frowns, stepping back and scratching his cheek. He sneaks a quick glance in my direction again before looking back at Alex. “I didn’t realize that. Sorry, man.”

“It’s cool. Just stop eye-fucking her.” Alex releases his grip on my hand. “So, are you cool with us sneaking in through the back door?”

The guy briefly hesitates but then nods. “Just don’t let Jay know I let you in … And please don’t tell Blaise I was looking at her, okay?” He stares straight ahead at Alex, as if he’s afraid to even glance in my direction.

“I won’t as long as Jay doesn’t show up the moment I step into his house.” Alex grabs my hand, only breaking eye contact with the guy as he steps forward, hauling me with him.

The guy hurriedly looks away from me as I pass him, like I’m some beastly creature whose sight stings his retinas. Which is cool and everything, but why is he suddenly so afraid to look at me? Because he thinks I’m Blaise’s?

“Alex,” the guy calls out. “You should check the master bedroom for Payton. I think I saw her going in there with a couple of Jay’s friends an hour or so ago.”

Alex’s body ripples with tension, causing my worry to soar. So many questions bite at my tongue, but I hold them back as Alex nods and strides toward the house, still clutching my hand.

Only when we’re far away from the guy do I let the questions leave my lips.
