I shake my head, wrapping my arms around myself. “N-No, I-I’m n-not.”

His expression softens. “Just let me drive. I promise I’ll get us there fast and safe.”

My body quivers more. Maybe he’s right. Maybe I am in shock.

“Fine.” I slide into the back seat, putting a lot of trust in him again, and I’m not sure why.

Once I get situated, I put Payton’s head on my lap and check her pulse. It takes me a moment to find it, the soft lull of her beating heart. I can see that she’s breathing, her chest lifting and falling. But her eyes remain shut.

“Pay, I’m so sorry,” I whisper as I smooth my hand over her head. “I’m sorry I’m not a better mom for you.” I continue to whisper words to her while waiting for Alex to get in.

After a minute ticks by and he doesn’t, I glance up and find him standing in front of the SUV with the headlights illuminating across him. He’s not alone either. Jason is standing in front of him, along with a tall, lanky guy who’s sporting a collared shirt and jeans.

Great. This can’t be good.

I push open the door and listen.

“Look, just let her sleep it off here,” the taller guy says. “There’s no reason to take her to a hospital because she got a little too high.”

“I didn’t realize being a spoiled brat meant you were a doctor, Jay.” Alex’s voice oozes with sarcasm. “My bad.”

“Oh, shut it,” Jay snaps, inching toward Alex. “You’re just as spoiled as the rest of us.”

Alex lets out a hollow laugh. “I assure you, I’m not. But again, nice job on assuming shit you know nothing about.” He turns to leave, but Jason grabs his arm.

“We can’t let you take anyone to the hospital. Some of the doctors aren’t as understanding about things as others, and if she ends up with one of those doctors, things could get bad for us really quick.”

Alex turns his head toward Jason, his dark gaze sending a chill down my spine.

“I’m going to say this once and only once,” Alex warns in a chilling tone. “Get your fucking hand off my arm or I’m going to break your fucking fingers so you can never grab anything again.”

Jason quickly releases him and raises his hands. “My bad, man.”

“Whatever. We’re done here.” Alex steps toward the driver’s door.

Jay and Jason trade a look, then Jason dodges to the side and blocks Alex’s path while Jay positions himself near the passenger side.

Alex lets out an exhausted sigh. “Are you guys this fucking moronic? Or have you forgotten who my father is?”

“We know who your father is. We also know how much of a disappointment you are to him,” Jay says, resting his arm on top of the hood of the SUV. “And I’m pretty sure he’d be proud of us for kicking your ass because, unlike you, he’s smart enough to realize that saving one junkie’s waste of space life isn’t worth bringing unwanted attention.”

As a storm of rage pours through me, I jump out of the car, my blood roaring in my eardrums.

They’re wasting time.

We don’t have time.

I need to get them out of our way.

“My sister isn’t a junkie, and her life isn’t a waste of space,” I growl out, stalking toward them.

Everyone’s gaze darts to me.

“Who the hell are you?” Jay asks as he scans me over.

I stride toward him with my fists clenched. “I’m the person who’s going to kick your ass if you don’t move out of the way so we can take my sister to the hospital.”

A hint of a smirk tugs at his lips. “I’d like to see you try, princess—”
