“Hadley didn’t leave the hospital, right?” I ask Alex.

“Yeah, I stopped her from leaving and then came out here to call you,” he says. “I figured since you have a thing for her, you’d probably want to help her.”

I could deny my feelings for her, but my next move proves Alex’s accusation.

“Good. Tell her to stay there. We’ll handle this.” I straighten in the seat. “Actually, can you put her on the phone so I can talk to her?”

“Let me see if she’s still in the waiting room.” The line grows silent for a moment then I hear him say, “Hey, tough girl, Blaise wants to talk to you.”

Tough girl? He’s given her a nickname?

“Why do they seem like friends now?” Rhyland asks confusedly.

I shrug. “I have no fucking idea.”

“Why?” Hadley’s voice trickles through the line.

“Because he’s going to help you,” Alex replies, sounding a bit amused.

“Why did you call him?” she hisses. “I don’t want his help… He’s helped me out too much already.”

"Oh, get over it," Alex tells her. "He's gonna help you, and then you can spend the next few days paying him back."

“I already owe him a ton of favors,” she grumbles.

“Then don’t make it up to him in favors.” Alex’s teasing tone has me baffled.

Just a day ago, he couldn't stand Hadley, and now he's joking around with her and giving her a nickname? What happened between them tonight?

“How else can I make it up to him?” Hadley asks, her tone laced with confusion.

“Well, I can think of a few ways off the top of my head,” Alex replies amusedly. “All of which require you taking off your clothes and letting him touch you—”

Smack!

“Fuck, that hurt,” Alex gripes through a laugh.

“I’m not a prostitute,” Hadley snaps.

“And I’m not telling you to be one,” Alex retorts. “It’s not like you don’t like Blaise. And yeah, my brother is totally inexperienced, but with a little guidance, I’m sure he can make it feel really good for you.”

Jesus, did he seriously just say that?

"Alex," I say loudly into the phone. "You better knock it off, or she's going to kick your ass."

“She already smacked me,” Alex tells me with hilarity in his tone, which sounds strange. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard him sound this at ease. “But we’re good now, right tough girl?”

Hadley mutters something incoherently then I hear shuffling.

“Hey,” she says into the phone, her voice weighted with exhaustion.

“Hey,” I reply, the biggest urge to hug her rising up inside me. “Alex told me what happened and I’m so fucking sorry.”

“Thanks… I think everything should be okay now… I hope.” She breathes out a sigh. “I don’t know what Alex told you, but I don’t think you should help me out with this thing with your dad. I can handle it. I’m fine.”

"I've sat in the hospital many times with Alex and Rhyland after their mom overdosed, so I know you're not fine." I chew on my bottom lip. I don't like what I'm about to do, but it might be our only choice. And besides, Alex is partly the reason everyone is in this mess so it might be good for him to help us. "We're going to fix this, but I need you to listen to me carefully and do exactly what I say. I need you to give Alex your car keys so you guys can switch cars. Then tell him where this box my dad gave you is so he can go pick it up and then drive down to the docks. Then, and this is really important, you need to lay low and when my dad texts you, you need to pretend like you're at that dock. And keep in touch with Alex so you can ask him a question if you need to."

“Blaise,” she says with a sigh. “I don’t want you guys to do this for me.”
