“More hoped than assumed, really. It would be great to refresh the dirt I have on you. I don’t think I’ve stored up anything juicy since tenth grade. I’m long overdue for blackmail material.”

He shook his head. “I was expecting room service,” he said with a smile behind his eyes. “Not a hooker.”

“Thank goodness for that. Isn’t it a little late for lunch?”

“Better late than never.”

There was a knock on the door, and Josh sprang to it, throwing it wide without looking again.

“You’ve got to start checking the door!” I said. “That could have been anyone!”

The room service attendant wheeled in a cart and set two covered dishes on the small round table. Josh tipped him, and he left with a puzzled glance at me.

“Twoplates?” I sat on his bed and crossed my legs. His eyes went to the line where my skirt ended. “Is the hooker late?”

He checked his watch. “Very. So late that she’s not coming at all.”

“What did she order?”

“Shedid not order anything. She doesn’t exist. I ordered lunch.”

“Lunch that requires two plates? Josh! You bad boy. You ordered lunch and lunch dessert.”

“Guilty.” He lifted the lids to reveal a plate with a burger and fries and a second plate on which sat a brownie sundae.

“Oh, wow. You’re awesome.”

“I know.” He sat in front of his meal and smoothed a linen napkin onto his lap.

“Can I have an ice cream fry?”

His smile was long-suffering. He handed me a long, squishy fry—my favorite kind. I trailed it through his ice cream, twisting it in the hot fudge so more would stick on, and then bit into it. “Wow. This is good.”

He waved me over. “Pull up a chair. Have some more.”

“I can’t.” I licked my fingertips. “I already had lunch. I just came over for more kissing.”

Josh dropped a fry. “More…kissing?”

I clasped my hands together. “That was my plan. I need more data. Last night’s kiss with you was incredible.” I ignored the sight of Josh puffing his chest out at the praise and hurried on. “But that might’ve just been because it was a one-off. With repetition your kisses could prove to be quite commonplace. But since your mouth is otherwise engaged…” I turned to go.

“Wait!” He glanced from his hamburger to me and then back again. He ripped his napkin from his lap and stood.

I laughed. “It’s okay. I don’t want to come between a man and his burger. Come find me after.”

He jumped up. “Please stay.” There was a plaintive quality to his voice that needled my heart.

“Okay.” I sat back down at the edge of his bed. He went over to the table and put the covers back over his food before turning to me.

My eyebrows went up. “Your ice cream’s gonna melt.”

“I don’t care.” He pulled his chair over to the bed and sat so that we were face to face.

I looked at him, and he looked at me. Without his even touching me, I knew the kiss wasn’t a one-off. My mind and heart reached out for him across the short distance between us as much as my body did. I wanted to travel back in time to that first kiss we shared five years ago and erase all the distance that had come between us since.

Except I hadn’t been the one to put it there.

No. Josh was the one who’d decided to end us at the beginning. Josh was the one who moved out of the country. Josh was the one who chose a job over me.
