“Jennifer’s headpiece was messed up, and she’s just as tall as I am.”

She was a tall woman with rich brown skin and startling blue eyes. On top of her head was a diamond held up by gold strands.

Lucious leaned forward, his warm lips brushing my outer ear. “Were you jealous, Corpse? Do you want me all to yourself?”

“Fuck no.” I jerked away, although my body was humming in pleasure. I yanked free.

“Oh, goodness, did she think we were—” Jennifer covered her mouth. “I would never.”

“Got it.” I backed up, embarrassment was catching up to me and my need to leave increased tenfold. I fled like my ass was on fire.

My finger hovered over the only other person I spoke to. “Fuck it.” I took a shot and sent off the message. If nothing came of it, okay. I’d find another way back, but I’d rather be anywhere but here or back at the mansion.

My phone buzzed, and butterflies erupted in the pit of my stomach. He’s just going to turn me down.MJ was a busy man.

MJ: I’ll be there in a bit.

Aridole wasn’t close by any means. There was no way he’d be able to come get me. My phone rang before I could give him the address of the diner.

“Hello?” I put my finger in one ear and moved past people to get outside where I could hear better.

“Send your location,” MJ said.

“I’m in Aridole and at this stupid house party, but I can send you where I can wait—”

“Nah, send me your current location. I’m in Aridole now.”

“Wait, you are?”

“Had a client.”

“Corpse!”

I turned to see Hawke making his way to me. “I’ll send the address.” I hung up and sent the message before Hawke made it to me.

“Where are you going?”

“A f—” MJ wasn’t exactly a friend, but he wasn’t an acquaintance either. We were close, but I wasn’t sure what to call him besides MJ. “I’m leaving.”

“Because you’re angry?” Hawke pulled me close, and I let him for now.

“No—”

“You looked ready to kill someone. Point them out, and we can do it together.”

Richard and the girls hanging on Rem came to mind, and I clamped my mouth shut. Knowing Hawke, he’d do it too. I’d find them chained up in some basement so we could kill them.

“Not tonight.”

Hawke’s face was so close I could see the brown and gold flakes in his green eye and the dark gray glass-like shards in his brown one. The agitation seemed to melt away as I stood in Hawke’s arms. How in the world did he do it?

“Another night?”

“Maybe,” I whispered, our mouths a breath apart.

Hawke made my brain hurt on a good day. He was the only one I wasn’t angry with, but he was still a king all the same. I jerked back before we ended up kissing. “Not tonight, Hawke.”

“We can leave and go back to your place.”
