I rounded up all the gray blobs and pushed them aside before I wound up wearing them. “Do you like songs, Zo? Want to sing something?”

She tilted her head and blinked at me.

“How about the alphabet song? Do you know that one?”

She blinked at me again.

“A-B-C-D…”

She grinned.

I pulled out my phone and called up a video I used a lot in my other job—a cute alphabet video with flashing letters of all colors. I held it up and sang along.

Zoe was transfixed. Every time we got to the end of a line, she’d repeat the letter in her cute little voice.

“A-B-C-D-E-F-G…”

“Gee,” Zoe whispered.

“H-I-J-K-L-M-N-O-P…”

“Pee,” Zoe murmured.

Kingston set down a small bowl of pasta in front of Zoe. “We try to limit screen time to just an hour a day.”

I winced. “Sorry. I should’ve asked.”

Thankfully the video came to its end. I reached for my phone when Zoe pressed the play button again. Smart kiddo.

Kingston smirked as he set a bigger bowl of pasta in front of me. “Now you’ll pay the price. She has your phoneandred sauce. There’s no way this will end well.”

Meaning she’d either cry when I took it away or she’d dunk it in her lunch.

This was a test.

And I was determined to show that smug Hollywood actor that I knew exactly what I was doing.

Chapter Four

King

That fancy phone was going to end up smeared with spaghetti sauce.

It was so going to be worth the bill to replace it. Then I wouldn’t have to hire her. Adam could go back to the agency and find someMrs. Doubtfirelookalike, and I wouldn’t have to feel these things about the gorgeous woman taking care of my daughter.

But she shocked me.

Taking advantage of the way Zoe was still enthralled over the alphabet video, Briar swept a deft hand over Zoe’s bowl of pasta. After nudging the bowl away from the captivated toddler, Briar sang along with the rest of the alphabet song. When the song was over, she nimbly swapped the phone for the bowl of pasta, and started singingOn Top of Spaghetti.

Zoe was transfixed. She didn’t even notice the phone was missing.

Dammit.

I was impressed. And charmed.

Briar and Zoe were busy slurping noodles, singing the spaghetti song for the third time, and faking sneezes. It was silly and fun and so damn cute.

Who was this woman?
