He put an arm around me. “Okay. As much as I hate this, I think we need to take the stairs. Can you do that in your bare feet?”

“I can. I’ll just take my time.”

“I’ll call my security to meet at your compound. I think you should pack just in case. We need to be prepared for any scenario.”

“Crew,” I urged. “How are we going to get him back?”

We walked toward the stairwell. Knight held an arm out so he could check the landing first. I dreaded descending all the flights of stairs, but the elevator made us too vulnerable to a waiting attack. Knight motioned to me to enter at the top of the staircase. We both paused. It was quiet and we began to take the stairs to the lowest level.

Both of us were on edge. It wasn’t until we exited the back of the building and Knight drove us away that I was ready to say more. I turned toward him.

“I don’t need Kimble to start looking for Crew,” I announced. “I can put out some feelers.”

“I can use my resources. Why not let me take care of it?” he offered.

“He’s my person. My right-hand. I’m responsible for what happened to him. It happened because of me.”

“You don’t know that. No one knows that. Have you forgotten Seraphina? My sister is going to need every reassurance I can give her that I will bring him back to her. I have a stake in finding him. Maybe even a bigger one.”

“Of course you do.” Knight and Seraphina were close. They had a sibling bond that was admirable and enviable in this world. “We need to call Seraphina now. She should know what’s happened.”

Knight whipped the car onto a side street I didn’t recognize. I realized he was trying to take a back route so that we didn’t travel on main roads.

“Maybe she knows something, or she’s heard something,” I added. “What if the Castilles know about the baby? What if this is their way to punish him? To take him out?”

Knight slowed at a stop sign. “Then why would they try to grab you?” His lips pinched together.

I shivered. “I don’t know.” I looked at him. He was sorting through it too.

“I don’t think the Castilles would take you out because of what Crew did to Brandon. It doesn’t follow the rules.”

“No, it doesn’t,” I admitted.

He pressed his foot on the gas and we sped through the city again.

“Then, we combine our resources. We’ll use everything we have to bring him back to your sister.”

Chapter4

Knight

Ikept watching her. Stealing glances when I slowed the car. I tried to gauge if this was shock talking, or the woman who ran the city talking. She knew I was doing it. She sensed the way my eyes analyzed her every movement. Her cues were dismissive. What did I expect? She had come face to face with the trauma that had terrorized her years ago. Kennedy wasn’t going to just stare at the blade. She was going to grab it and turn it back on the person who inflicted the pain. I had no fucking clue which family it was that she would go after, but they had to know what would happen next. They knew they had taken a gamble, trying to grab her off the street. It wasn’t going to pay off for them.

I turned into the front gate and parked in the garage. Within minutes we were inside the house and Kennedy stormed through the house. I followed closely and watched as she sat behind her desk. I stared at her.

“Aren’t you going to go pack?” I asked.

She rustled through papers in the drawer. “I have work to do.”

I folded my arms. “I didn’t agree to work. I agreed to letting you pack a bag and getting you out of here. Somewhere much safer. This is far too dangerous.”

Her green eyes flared. “I’m going to find Crew first.”

“We can do that at the same time as when you’re in a place where no one can find you.” I let my arms drop to my sides and edged closer to the desk. She had practically turned the entire thing inside out. “What are you looking for?” I asked.

“I know it’s here. It is. I put it here myself.”

I placed my palm over the top of her hand. “Hey, just stop for a second.”
