Letting an obsequious smile curve my lips, I dipped my head to be within kissing range. “I warned you not to top me from the bottom, Little Bird.”

I let go, and she stumbled backward with a soft gasp that zinged straight to my cock.

“And I knew I needed to ask Rafe to teach me.”

“He doesn’t have time.”

“Or maybe James. Atleast he does what I say.”

“Because he’s not a dominant, pretty girl.” I stalked her, placing one determined foot before the other. Her expression changed from smart ass to wary, graduating to fear.

Mystomach dropped, but I stayed the course. It wasn’t what I wanted her to feel with me,ever, but it was necessary. Rafe commanded I teach her. And I chose to, even if my methods might differ from what he might expect.

“Stop,” Lux tried. Her hands extended, arms straight, palms out.

“Useless.” I swept themaside and grabbed for her, my fingertips grazing her bare, toned stomach as she twisted away. Everything I’d taught her, she’d forgotten in the face of terror.

Better me than some prick who wants to make her really scream.

My hands darted out, pulling at her hair.

She batted at them, ducking and weaving. Her natural grace started to emerge. I hid a smile. There she is.

“Killian, I’ll fucking deck you.” She slapped at me, her blows weak and ineffective.

Come on, Little Bird. You’re better than this.

“That’s not going to stop shit.” I smirked, pushing forward. My next grab caught the waist of her workout pants. I pulled, and the material stretched.

“Stop!” She shrieked, bringing both hands down, knife-edged. Her counter blows parted my hands like butter. A palm to my stomach knocked some of the wind out of my sails, but not enough.

“You think this,” I tugged at the material of her pants, pulling her forward to cup her sex and dug my fingers into the soft flesh beneath, “will protect you? I don’t even need a knife to throw you on the ground and fuck you.”Preferably senseless and willing. But that wasn’t the lesson.

Stop running, Lux. You can fight this.

I should know; I trained her.

Fear dilated herpupils as I loomed over her. Someone who wanted to hurt her wouldn’t stop at a few blows, and she needed to come to terms with that in a safe environment.

“No!” Her strangled scream was all the warning I got before she crooked a heel behind my knees and shoved me backward with everything she had.

I landedon my ass before she crouched over me, pounding away with clenched fists I blocked as best I could, but a few blows got through. My jaw ached, my blood thrummed, but I kept my needs locked away and let her have at it.

“Be her fucking punching bag. Whatever she needs. But don’t you fucking touch her.”Rafe’s pep talk in his office after her birthday rattled in my head.

I relaxed my legs and let her pound away, saving each blow in my memory, watching herface as she went through all the signs: fear, rage. Then the drop hit her as she hammered listlessly at my chest and I took that, too.

Her frenzy expended, Lux drooped over me, her hands pressed over the faded bruises I’d earned on her behalf and would take again in an instant. Her chest heaved, though if it were from exertion or emotion that drove her I couldn’t be sure.

“Pretty bird.” I brushed back sweat-softened hair that curled around my finger, mangling the nicknames I’d made for her. “Your hair curls?”

“Like a head of pubes.” She raised her flushed face and offered a mocking grin as she started to climb off me. “Attractive, isn’t it? Tight little ringlets that make me look more like a vampire than a shifter.”

“I think it’s cute.”

She snorted. “So does my hairdresser when I pay her five hundred a month to chemically straighten it.”

I clung to her curl, using my hostage to tug her back to where she had been and smiled. “Stay. Please. I like you there.” I held her attention but let mine wander, formingthe words in my head before I said them for once. “You can never beyou. Can you?” I tucked the curl behind her ear, setting her free.
