Lux purred and wound her body around mine, kissing me openmouthed, hot and ready to go. “All right.”

“Jesus. You are a randy little slut.”

“Your slut.” She looked up at me through herjeweled lashes, eyes luminous.

I caught her collar in the crook of my fingers to prevent myself from throwing her over my shoulder and doing what I promised, albeit a few hours early.

“Knock it off.” Rafe’s sharp tone broke into my aroused haze.

I stared over Lux’s head at the three suits seated around Rafe. And by suits, I meant it in the insulting fashion. None of the three men wore a well-styled suit, or even one you might wear on a Sunday. These were of the cheap, polyester variety. Each man sported the same haircut and was seated straight enough that the sticks up their combined asses wouldn’t jab too hard.

Rafe introduced the men, though I didn’t bother to remember their names. He sighed and snapped his fingers. “Please pay fucking attention. Willow’s husband was killed, which we knew. The community tried to keep it quiet, but it was a hit.”

Willow’s late husband had been a quokka, like her, and the father to Rafe’s newly adopted tribe.

“A vesper ran him over. That’s what counts as a hit these days?”

“Not like a small mammal is hard to kill.” Rafe sipped his whiskey and handed the glass to Lux.

She took it by reflex, but I squeezed her waist and she put it back down.

Rafe shook his head and didn’t bother to glance my way. “He owed a lot of moneyto a minor mafia-like outfit. Same people who brought your old friends our way. Looks like we’ve managed to establish a vendetta with a turf war.”

“And the Smiths are going to help you?” Lux asked, her voice laced with doubt.

“Smiths?” Rafe’s brow dipped.

Ilaughed into her hair. She’d taken as little notice of the suits’ names as I had.

“The hired help.” I waved in their direction.

One waved back.

Jesus.

“You’d have better luck building your own army.” Lux’s fingers clawed my forearm where it wrapped around her waist.

“If it comes to that. New job for you both. Work with Dingo Boy. He’s got the skills—and some resources at his disposal.”

You sneaky bugger.

That’s why Rafe had been so keen to hire Cade. I pressed my lips together, wishing my best friendhad taken the time to work it through with me, but then, I had been distracted the last few nights.

“What about the—” I blinked at the vacant chairs where the Smiths had sat. “That’s fucking weird.”

Lux nodded, pressing back into me. I closed my arms tighter around her.

Rafe rolled his eyes. “Start tomorrow. Before anything else gets out of hand. I want to get home and make sure she’s safe. And the kids. ”

I nodded. Rafe had moved Willow and her tribe of fluff balls into his house, but that didn’t ensure their safety. “Whatever you need. Tell me in advance next time, yeah?” I didn’t bother to keep the pissed-off note out of my voice as I drew Lux back to the entrance of the VIP area and gave Cade a hard look.

He stared right back and didn’t flinch.

Kudos to you there, brother.

“Wait.” Lux squirmed in my arms, turning back to Rafe. “Why did he owe money? Willow’s husband.”

Rafe paused for a long moment, his dark green eyes shot through with gold ashis eagle surfaced.
