“It was just the perfect storm,” Logan said.

“Exactly. If you want to get to know me, I’d love that. And if you don’t, that’s fine too,” she said. “I’m so happy to have the chance to get to see you as a man. I’ve thought of you often and hoped you’d ended up in a happy home.”

“I did. I had a very good upbringing.”

Cora reached out and hugged him. It was awkward at first because he was standing so stiffly. But he returned the embrace and heard her sigh. He couldn’t imagine what it had been like for her to live with the decision she’d made. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. It’s the least I could do,” Cora said.

The photographer was calling for the groom’s parents and Cora smiled at him as she turned away. He watched her go. His life would have been different if he’d been raised by her and Tad, but he didn’t know that it would have been better.

He saw his mom watching him and realized he owed her an apology. He started toward her and she motioned that she’d come to him.

“Mom, I’m so sorry for what I said last night,” he said the moment she got to him.

Juliette pulled him close for a hug. “It’s okay. I deserved it.”

“No,” he said firmly. “You didn’t. I was being a jerk. I was raised better than I behaved, and I can only blame it...actually I have no excuse.”

“You’re a Bisset, Logan. No matter what, you react strongly to everything. Emotions are hard for you and I get that. You remind me a lot of your father,” she said. “You always have. You’re stubborn and brash.”

“I am,” Logan admitted. “Why have you stayed with him all these years?”

“Because he is always trying to be a better man. He loves me and I love him, and it’s not easy, but each of these things we’ve lived through has brought us closer,” she said.

“Mom, I could use your advice. I hurt Quinn and I need to win her back,” he said. “Will you help me?”

“Yes, son,” she said.

His brothers drifted over to them in the back of the church. Zac was at the front with the bridal party, but Leo and Dare were with him. Mari had gone outside to take a call from Inigo. And his dad was nowhere to be seen.

“You know it’s not that your father and I ignore the mistakes, we just try to find a way to use them to make us stronger as a couple. I hope you boys know that,” his mother said.

“I don’t necessarily understand it, but it seems to work for you two,” Logan said.

“It does,” Dare added, and Leo nodded.

“What works?” August said as he came up behind them. “Did you two have your talk, Logan?”

“Yes, sir. I already apologized to Mom for my behavior last night, but I owe you one as well,” he said as he turned to face his father.

His dad clapped him on the shoulder. “Apology accepted. I would have said something similar in your shoes. I am sorry that my past actions have caused so much strife for you lately. I hope you know that I have never regretted being your father. No matter the circumstances of your birth, I’ve always loved you.”

“I know, Dad,” he said. “I love you and Mom too.”

“Damned straight. You got the best parents,” he said.

“I wouldn’t go that far,” Dare said. “You do have exacting standards.”

“Which has served you well in your political career,” August said. “As a matter of fact, I have a lobbyist I want you to talk to. Got a minute?”

“Sure,” Dare said.

“I’m going to check on Adler. I feel so bad that her mother’s not here to share this special moment, and that my actions caused her extra stress,” his mom said. “It was a beautiful ceremony though.”

“It was,” Logan agreed as his mom walked away.
