“Now, who are you and where are you from?” he questioned. At my defiant silence, he added, “We can sit here all night, Miss McEwan, if that’s your true name. I’ve nowhere else to be.”

I considered my options and the weight of his threat. None of which were in my favor.

“I told you the truth,” I grumbled. “My nameisCallista McEwan, and I am a school teacher in Virginia. Nothing more.”

I was about to add the fact that I was here in Washington State vising my friends, but he had already verified that Hilly and Maggie were nowhere in town. Nor would they be for another century.

“Are you, then?”

“Yes.”

“Not an Arcan Hunter?”

“Of course, not,” I answered testily. “I didn’t even know they existed until yesterday.”

Or was that a hundred years from now?

His eyes narrowed at me. “You’re not telling me the entire truth though. Why?”

I started to protest, but it was well known that I couldn’t tell a convincing lie to save my life. Which at the moment it just might.

“You wouldn’t believe me,” I answered.

“Try me.”

I shook my head.

“No? Then I have one question that you will answer. Who is Logan Thorne?”

I nearly fell off the haybale as I gaped up at him. “How do you know about him?”

Since the man wouldn’t exist for another century.

Bryant pulled a small white card from the leather side pouch attached to his belt and handed it to me. It was the business card Thorne had given to me right before I left for the cave site.

“You searched through my pockets?” I angrily accused.

Then I gasped and shoved my hand into my right pocket to find it empty.

Bryant held up and waggled my penlight. “Looking for this?”

“Give that back!” I growled, awkwardly reaching for it.

He held it high above my reach. Then he clicked the button, switching on its thin electric light beam.

“One more question,” he demanded. “What kind of magic is this?”

“Magic?”

“Are you a mage? A witch?”

“What a stupid...Of course I’m not!” I pursed my lips as he clicked the penlight on and off. “It’s not magic. Anyone can turn on that light. You’re doing it now. Does that make you a wizard or warlock?”

Bryant frowned, handing it back to me. “What is it then? Where do you come by this strange beam of light?”

“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”

“I will, if it’s the truth.”
