“I’d better see Saint so I can get back before Aaron misses me.” He gave Blake a small nod before slowly ambling toward the suite he was sharing with his best friend.

He found Saint stretched out on the couch, a documentary of some sort playing quietly on the large screen television that adorned one wall.

“Finally! I’ve been worried sick, you know.”

“I messaged you a couple of hours ago. I’m fine.” At Saint’s skeptical look, Marshall capitulated. “Okay, so I’m better than I was earlier today.”

“You look better, and it’s good to see you moving under your own steam again. Is this the soul bond’s doing?”

“Yes and no,” Marshall replied, slumping into a chair. “Aaron’s wolf tried to heal me.”

Saint sat up. “What? But don’t you have to be mated for that to happen?”

“Yeah. According to Alice and Darcy, thanks to the soul bond, his wolf has imprinted on me. He tried to heal me via the bond, but because we’ve been apart for a few days, it’s weakened again and, as a result, has totally tapped out his wolf.”

“Shit. Is Aaron okay?”

“Nothing a lot of rest won’t fix. He’s sleeping now, which is why I’m here. I wanted to check in with you and grab my bag. I’m going to be staying in his room until we’re both healthy. Or at least, as healthy as we were before you and I took off to the city.”

“Then what happens?”

“I honestly don’t know. Other than us sealing the soul bond, I don’t know how this is going to work, Saint.” Marshall let his friend see the confusion he was feeling.

“Talk to me, Marsh. What’s going on?”

“We’ve proved that Aaron and I are soul bound; however that has happened. Aunt Lisa said she’d not seen any mention of a shifter way back in the family tree, but I was too sick to take it all in. But when we seal the bond, I’ll become the Alpha-Mate of the West Mill Pack.”

“Huh. Hadn’t thought of that,” Saint admitted. “That means you’ll need to be here to help Aaron run the Pack.”

“Doing what? From what little I’ve seen, everything runs pretty smoothly. Aaron has a great team in place. What am I going to do?”

Saint didn’t reply, and Marshall groaned and dropped his head onto the back of the chair.

The sound of the narrator in the documentary was the only noise in the room, and Marshall felt himself drifting off to sleep. A tap against his foot had him rousing.

“Come on, you need to get back to your mate. I’m sure you’ll both be feeling better in the morning, and you can have a proper discussion around what being the Alpha-Mate entails. Until then, to use one of your mother’s favorite sayings,‘don’t borrow trouble’.”

“True.” Marshall pushed himself up from his seat. “Thanks, Saint.”

“What for?” Saint frowned.

“For being you.”

“Goddess, the man finds his mate and gets all mushy on me.” Saint waved his hand towards the door. “Shoo. You’re interrupting my program.”

Marshall grinned, not at all taken in by the act. He knew Saint was just as disconcerted as he was at the idea of them not being together. He also knew his friend would help him come up with a solution.

“G’night, Saint.”

“Why are you still here?” Saint feigned an avid interest in the television. As Marshall closed the door behind him, he heard a softg’night, Marsh.

Chapter 13

Aaronmadehiswaygingerly down the corridor towards his office, sticking close to the wall just in case his legs gave out. He leaned heavily on his cane and took steady breaths, desperate to keep his equilibrium.

He’d woken up thirty minutes ago, disappointed his mate wasn’t beside him, but also grateful that he could sneak away to his office. He hated this feeling of weakness that, despite nearly thirty-six hours of resting, hadn’t abated. He hated being unproductive, despite Josh’s assurances that there was nothing for him to worry about.

He knew everyone would be pissed at him for leaving his room, especially Rafe, who’d been on guard duty outside his suite. He’d asked the panther to fetch him some orange juice, and once Rafe had disappeared around the corner, he’d escaped.
