“Anima Vinculum?” De La Reue echoed. Confusion marred the fae’s features for a second. When realization hit, he turned to stare at Aaron and Marshall, eyes widening.

“Are you sure?” Fuller asked, and then had the grace to look abashed at the glare Osborne threw at him. He held a hand up in supplication. “My apologies.”

He turned his attention back to Aaron and Marshall.

“You are aware of the soul bond?”

“Bit hard not to be,” Marshall replied with a snort.

Aaron grinned. “What he said.”

“Well, this is exciting news. We haven’t had a soul bonded pair for a long time.” Fuller was almost rubbing his hands in glee.

“Wait. You are human, are you not?” De la Reue asked. “Although, I can sense somethingother.”

“From the tests and research we have done over the last week, I am about ninety-five percent human. There is apparently a shifter great-grandparent in the mix somewhere.”

De la Reue tilted his head, the fall of his silver hair covering one eye. He brushed it back behind his ear unconsciously. “No. What I’m sensing is more than a drop of shifter blood. You have the energy of a strong alpha.”

“Really, males are so oblivious at times,” Osborne said with a sigh and a teasing smile. “It explains why most seers are female.”

“What am I missing?” De la Reue demanded, obviously not happy at being called lacking.

“Look at Alpha West’s energy signature,” she prompted.

Aaron found himself under scrutiny from the two male councilors. He wasn’t intimidated, but he didn’t like it.

“Oh! Of course,” Fuller said. “That’s not normal, is it?”

“No, it’s not. It’s the result of the soul bond.”

“Would either of you care to enlighten us?” Aaron growled. He was getting impatient and wanted to get back to some private time with his mate.

“Your mate carries the same energy signature as you,” Osborne told him. “When a couple mates, there is a transfer of strengths and weaknesses from each individual. Their energy signatures combine and create a new one that is a mix of the two. Their scents change, one may become physically stronger, things like that.”

“It’s how you can recognize if someone is mated,” Aaron nodded his agreement. “So, how is ours different?”

“Marshall’s is almost a carbon copy of yours,” Osborne said. “You said that he was a former elite solider. Did you lead a mixed team?”

Marshall dropped into the chair on Aaron’s left. “Yes. I was the only human commander in the squadron. There was only one other human on my team. The rest were shifters or supes.”

“And you never had any issues with them following you?” De la Reue asked, and Aaron didn’t like the speculative look in the fae’s turquoise eyes.

“No, not really. I mean, there were the usual grumbles that most CO’s get, but my team was loyal to a fault. When we left, it was like breaking up a family.”

“We?” Fuller asked.

“My best friend, Saint, is a tiger shifter and was my second in command.”

“Hmm,” Fuller mused, rubbing his chin. Aaron thought it made him look like a wannabe evil genius and he bit back a laugh.

“What are you thinking, Secretary Fuller?” he asked instead.

“Your mate obviously has strong alpha traits, even as a human.” Fuller looked at Marshall. “You said your best friend is a tiger shifter. How long have you been friends for?”

“Our whole lives. We were neighbors as kids and pretty much inseparable.”

“And you and he never…” Fuller paused, his face turning red. “Um, I mean, you’ve always been just friends?”
