“What can I help you with, or are you escaping Mom?”

“I’ve heard from the Assembly,” Vaughn told him, not returning his son’s smile.

“You have?” Aaron leaned forward to check his email. “Why didn’t they contact me directly?”

“They are sending you a full report, but Secretary Fuller didn’t want to disturb you if you were still recovering.”

“No offense, Dad, but he should have still called me first. If I wasn’t available, the call should have gone to Josh, as Beta.”

“I know. I told him that, and he sends his apologies.”

“So, what did he have to say?” Aaron asked, tamping down his anger at the Secretary. He had enough to worry about without the Assembly not following protocol.

Before Vaughn could answer, a brief knock sounded at the door, and Marshall stepped into the room.

“Hey,” Aaron greeted his mate with a smile.

Marshall crossed the room and kissed him briefly. “Hey yourself. What’s got you all worked up?”

“Damn soul bond,” Aaron muttered and glared at his father, who quickly disguised his chuckle as a cough.

“I was just telling Aaron that I’d heard from the Assembly.”

“That’s good news, isn’t it?” Marshall asked, frowning as he looked at the two men. “What do they say? Is it not good news?”

“I don’t know. Dad was just about to tell me when you walked in.”

“Well, it’s not bad news,” Vaughn said with a sigh. “Harlan has admitted to buying spelled ammunition, but he won’t say from where. He said he got them from a guy in a back alley in Sandhill, and that’s all he knows.”

“So he came with the intention of killing me?” Aaron growled, his wolf itching under his skin.

“He says no, but the evidence suggests otherwise.”

“What happens to him now?” Marshall asked. His mate was standing next to him in full battle mode, arms crossed and with an intense stare.

“He’s been sentenced to five years on Fort William Island.”

Marshall let out a low whistle, and relief flooded through Aaron. Fort William Island was the maximum-security prison for supernaturals. On a small island in the middle of the harbor, it was the supernatural version of Alcatraz. Warded to the hilt, special passes had to be given to get to and from the island.

“Do we know why he was so against Aaron?” Marshall asked as he laid a reassuring hand on Aaron’s shoulder.

“No,” Vaughn sighed. “I’ve spoken with my cousin, Mary. She’s horrified at what Harlan has done and said. She wanted me to reassure you that his views are certainly not hers or her mate’s. They have disowned Harlan, and want nothing more to do with him.”

“Are they coming to the ceremony?”

“No, she sends her apologies and wishes you and Marshall all the best, but she feels it would be better if they didn’t attend any Pack functions for a little while.”

“A wise move,” Aaron agreed.

“Have you spoken with Kyr?” Vaughn asked.

“Yes. He’s furious, as you can expect. He’s checked all the wards and restrengthened them. He and Alice are looking at tweaking them to make them more sensitive.”

“Secretary Fuller says they found a highly sophisticated cloaking spell on the gun, which is why it would have gotten through the wards. Let Kyr know so he can make the appropriate adjustments.”

“That’s some pretty high-level magic,” Marshall commented. “Are the Assembly trying to trace who may have sold Harlan the gun and ammo?”

“Yes. They’ve got their best trackers and mages on it. They’ve promised to keep us informed.”
