He smiled as the sun left them, inching away from the crime scene. He smiled as she read the words on the pages so confidently, so clearly in the woods, alone with her thoughts, his eyes watching, roving over her slim leg in her winter stocking, over her dainty hands.

There wasn't much meat on her bones, and for that, he was sorry.

But the devastation.

That is where the actual marrow was.

Maria’s parents were godly and named right. Ancestors bred and chained to the town for decades, difficult to drive out.

He needed new guards at each point of the cross. And they would serve well when they had nothing left to live for.

The Deacon flew up high, white wings reflecting the fading light, fangs elongated, sharp and eager.

He smiled as he dove, thrilled with the way a hunt could feel when all the games were forgotten.

His whisper was felt on the cold winter breeze, carried away into the nothing.

“God is out here.”
