“Where do all these people come from?” We are sitting on a bench, waiting for Old Faithful to show us her glory. It better be good because my ass is starting to ache from the wooden plank we are camped at.

Phoebe is cleaning her camera gear. She is switching batteries or whatever she needs to keep busy as we wait. On her face is a beautiful grin, and I can’t help but love the look. Too bad I am going to crush it with my news.

I have to focus on something else; in the distance, where hopefully the visitors read the signs to stay away from the thermal pools. So they don’t boil to death, like those lovers in that movieDante’s Peak. What a way to go, though; I mean, come on, if I am going to die a horrible death, you best believe I better be inside my favorite second home, Phoebe’s pussy.

Speaking of hot holes, the geyser starts spitting to life. Warming up for its arrival. I guess we are alike in that way. Giving a little preview before we shot rockets skyward.

“Stop it.” Phoebe smacks my arm.

“What?” Acting innocent as always,

“Like you’re not thinking of the geyser being your dick shooting fireworks.” Phoebe rolls her eyes like I am so immature. But if I am, then so she, so there.

A father a few feet away with his family coughs to get our attention and shame us for our crass language.

“Wow, ma’am. I don’t even know who you are. How dare you talk about penises ejaculating. There are children around!” Two can play your game, baby. “I am so sorry, sir. Foreigners, right?” I shrug at him as he moves down the boardwalk away from us.

I earn a few extra swats.

“Asshole!”

“Stop, think of the children, Phoebe!” I force her arms down and nuzzle my nose against hers, just like she likes it when I piss her off so bad and annoy the shit out of her.

Gosh, Phoebe and I, we are going to be lifers.

“You made me miss the shot.” Her lips touch mine as her words come out.

“What shot? Shot of cum shooting into the sky? I am sure we can take a few pictures of its left evidence.” I wrap an arm around her shoulder and turn us to face the geyser spurting a sad ending.

“We are waiting until it goes again.”

“You can’t be serious! That’s another hour, and honestly, Old Faithful was being a tease; she was ten minutes late. Didn’t blast to the sky like all the signs promised; shit, Phoebe, we ain’t even get our rocks off. How about we go flirt with that one down the road? That girl over there knows exactly what to deliver to keep her promise.” I’m not even trying to play with her. I hate to say it; my mama might wash out my mouth. But it’s alittleboring.

“I’ll give you fifty bucks to get ice cream and grope everything in the gift shop.” Phoebe doesn’t even have to tempt me with a good time; she pulls out the money, and I know she understands me.

I feel seen.

“Now, see, if you would have led with that. Then I would have been like, if you want to sit here all day, baby, all day, we will because you deserve the perfect shot. And you are going to get it.” I grab the cash from her hand and kiss her on the mouth because I love her and show her that affection, so she keeps loving me. “Rocky Road, my queen?”

“Don’t come back if they don’t have it.” Such a drama queen.

Inside is as busy as outside, but at least there is air conditioning and ice cream. I save the ice cream for last. There is an hour to kill, and I will punish every minute, wasting my time inside this gift shop. It has mugs, shirts, magnets, anything you want, and in almost every shape, color, and size.

What catches my eye is a bouquet of flowers. They are colorful, dead daises. Something cheap, but overprized here. Still, I grab a handful because I hope what I have to say to her doesn’t kill me. Because it is already crippling me.

I make it back just in time for the timed eruption. A cup of mint chocolate chip for me and a cup of Rocky Road for her. She doesn’t even like nuts, just the marshmallows. My girlfriend wants my nuts, but that’s a different topic.

As you can imagine, I catch Phoebe talking to a stranger, listening to their pilgrimage to the very first national park. But I don’t interrupt her just yet; I want to remember she can take care of herself. I know she is a thriver. Jesus, I’ve got to keep this light, or else I won’t be able to go through with it.

Phoebe grabs her camera and snaps a hundred pictures in a few seconds. I am sure she loves how the heated water is spraying over the sulfured ground. The smell of rotten eggs made her brim with joy.

It’s almost sundown, so we wait a little longer to watch the sunset. One more memory we can have, all cataloged on Phoebe’s hard drive. When it ends, we sit back down and enjoy our frozen treat. I spoon a big scoop into my mouth and instant brain freeze. Phoebe laughs, grabbing her camera and taking photo after photo of my pained smile.

“Not nice.”

“I think I find you more attractive when you have that tormented brain freeze face.” But karma is back again; Phoebe swallows a scoop, and bam, it hits her hard; she is squeezing her eyes shut.

“See, like I said, not nice.” She pushes me away, and I fall on my ass. “Meany, beany, Phoebe-be!” I dust myself off and throw the rest of my ice cream away. She hands me her cup filled with melted chocolate ice cream and the nuts she leaves behind for me.
