Stars glittered in the sky, or maybe my imagination made the night more glamorous.

We sat there in the awkward outside the city limits of Memphis, Tennessee.

“You from here?” It’s you who initiates our first familiarity.

“Washington.”

“What part?”

“Tacoma.”

“Had some friends from there. Nice city.” It was for others, but it wasn’t my home.

“What about you?”

“Philly.”

I nod, thinking about the Amish in Pennsylvania.

“What conspiracy theory do you believe in?”

“Conspiracy theory?”

“I think you can tell a lot about a person, based on what conspiracy theories they believe.”

“I don’t know; you go first.”

“Aliens, parallel universes, and the devil’s past incident.”

“Huh, interesting.”

“So, what about you?”

“Bigfoot, maybe, and hollow earth. Also, aliens is a given.”

“Listen, thanks for trying to stop her and helping me out. But I’ve got to figure out how to get them back home without any money or anything.” Standing up and wiping off your pants, I stand also.

“Do you need to use a phone?” Maybe phone a friend?

“I’m sure the front desk will help me out. I need to get a spare key to my room.”

“How long are you here for?” Because walking away would be too easy, and I love a good plot twist.

“Supposed to check out tomorrow.” Putting your tatted hands into the depths of your baggy jeans.

“Well, I’m here until Tuesday. If you need more time, I have two beds. Room #123.”

Your dark brown eyes stare at me for the longest time, and I try to remember what I had for dinner because it might be stuck in my teeth.

“You’re a crazy chick, you know that, right? What if I was some sick murderer?”

“Murderers don’t usually cry. On the spectrum of a serial murderer’s brain, they are on the opposite of where altruistic people.”

“I could be a thief.”

I stare at the side of the hotel, the new paint job disguising its age well. But the rust in the bathroom is not.

“Everything is replaceable.” Learning a lesson like that isn’t easy, but it puts everything in perspective.
