“I think they said five hundred.” Phoebe doesn’t sound out of breath; she sounds like she took her first one and can’t wait for the next. “But you know what, that might have been for a different mountain.”

“Tell me, are we lost, Phoebe?” I bend over and take a big breath.

“If we are, then it’s part of the plan, and that means we aren’t lost at all.”

“I forgot that about you.”

“I ran around without any pants or plans?”

“That you like not knowing; everything is a surprise for you to discover.” We finally make it to the top, and we don’t even have to say any words; we just simply are.

This place is impressive; this country is incredible. I can see for miles every step below me is worth it for a few seconds of this view. The farmland below us is bright green fields. Water buffalo take their daily walks, and the clouds even go slow enough to make the perfect painting.

There are couples on the top of the mountain, though Phoebe tells me it is a place newlyweds come to sustain their vows. We watch a few in white clothing as they make this place among strangers their wedding day.

Phoebe turns to face the mountain; she always finds everything no one else can see. It’s a gift I wish I had.

After Phoebe snaps all her pictures, she feels she needs us to continue back to the Mua Caves. Inside, we can explore beneath the rough rocks. I duck my head several times because the ceiling wasn’t made for the height of my hair.

“Did you know Skull Island is here?” Phoebe whispers it as we squish along the small corridors in the cave.

“Is it full of skulls?” I joke. She laughs; she is warming up to me a bit more.

“King Kong, Skull Island, you dork.”

“Are you serious? King Kong came to Vietnam? I am going to see him? Do you think I could get his autograph? You’re right, his hands are too big for a pen. Are we going there tomorrow?”

“Of course.” Phoebe is the one who takes my fingers in her own now. “I thought you and your Navy buddies would like it.”

“We would love it.” I stop behind her, and there is this sexual frustration that builds between us. A degree that increases every time we touch since Joshua Tree. “Phoebe.”

She is slow as she turns, scanning my jacket before reaching up to my neck and then face.

I can hear our hearts beating against each other. Pounding to be in sync with the other. Begging for the noise to echo the same.

Phoebe puts two fingers to my lips just as I am about to speak.

“Do you hear that, Enzo?” She turns her head, and I listen for it too. “It’s the good echoes.” My face breaks into an emotional smile. Phoebe’s head rests on my chest, and we slowly sway inside the cave.

After a few people come by, we figure we better head back for dinner. It didn’t rain that night, and after Phoebe says goodnight to my friends, I walk her back to the place she is staying.

“Can I come in?” I stand outside of the door.

“Depends. Are you planning on staying the night?” There is a flirty question on her tongue.

“I don’t assume happy endings; I try to make them happen.” I lean forward and give her a kiss.

“Fine, come in. I have to shower first, though. I am all sweaty from the humidity.” Phoebe pulls me in and closes the door behind me.

“Can both of us fit? I am sweaty too.” As I sit on the couch, I pull my shirt away and let the cool air dry me a bit.

“It’s outside.”

“Guess I will wait my turn then.”

Phoebe kisses my forehead before heading out the side door. I hear the water running, and the sky has turned dark. After ten minutes, I walk out there, and there is nothing but fields in the distance.

“Phoebe.” I shift to open the bamboo curtain and see her naked and wet, and it does wonders for the member in my shorts.
