I shake my head no, knowing that if I get in that car with him, I may never be seen alive after. Hell, they may not even find my body. I know the Cammareris are good at hiding the evidence of their dirty deeds. But that doesn’t stop him from scooping up my trembling body and depositing me in the passenger seat. He rounds the car and starts the engine, all while my brain is trying to figure a way out of this mess.

I’m not that girl anymore, and I was sure I was long since over the trauma my ex-husband Kris had inflicted on me. After being on the end of all his alcohol and rage-induced beatings, I swore I would never be a victim again. I know self-defense, hand-to-hand combat, and how to shoot a gun for God’s sake. But none of that is worth anything when your mind betrays you.

Closing my eyes, I take a deep breath and resign myself to the fact that I won’t live to see another day.

My eyes fly open when my body is jostled, and a scream rips from my lungs as my nightmare creeps into reality. Kris is right in front of me, his hands gripped around my throat again. I flail and try to defend myself before my arms are banded tightly to my chest.

“Shhh,” a deep, calming voice murmurs into my ear.

My body stills, the flight leaving me. That isn’t Kris’s voice. My vision clears, and I turn my face to stare up into the obsidian eyes of Severu. My breath hitches in my chest.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” he says lowly as he makes his way up a set of stairs toward a massive house.

Everything from the past few hours floods back into my mind, and my entire body goes taut. The man in the alley, Severu saving me, beating the man to death—I’m sure he’s dead and if he’s not, he wishes he was—and then essentially kidnapping me. I must have drifted off to sleep in the car.

What the fuck is wrong with me? Not an ounce of my police training means shit now. How the hell am I going to get out of this?

“Guilia!” Severu calls loudly as we enter the foyer.

I hear footsteps from somewhere in the house as they resound on the tile floors.

“Jesus, Severu. What did you do?” a woman asks nearby.

Turning my head, I focus on the beautiful brunette as she makes her way over to us.

“What’s wrong with her?”

“First, I didn’t do anything.” He sounds irritated. “And second, I don’t know if anything is wrong. She was attacked and except for screaming when she woke up, she hasn’t said a word.”

“Shit,” the woman I know to be Guilia Cammareri says, running her hands through her luscious curls. “Take her to the blue guestroom. I will be there in a minute.”

Severu nods before heading up yet another set of stairs. He is silent as he carries me and gentle as he puts me down on the bed. His gaze travels over me before darkening. Severu stands abruptly, leaving the room, only to return a minute later holding a green t-shirt in his hands. He holds it out to me without looking at me.

“Your shirt is torn,” he says gruffly. “I know you’ve been through a bit today and thought you may want something to wear that covers…”

Looking down at my chest, I see that the white lace bra I am wearing leaves little to the imagination. My breasts are bigger than average, all but spilling out, and my nipples are clearly visible through the sheer fabric. After taking the t-shirt, I discard my torn garment and slip it over my head.

Guilia comes rushing into the room, followed shortly by a graying man carrying what looks to be a doctor’s traveling bag.

“Here she is,” Guilia gestures to me.

The man steps beside the bed, and I shrink away from him.

“Don’t worry,” Severu says roughly. “This is Doctor White. Our live-in physician. He’s here to make sure that you haven’t been seriously injured.”

My gaze snaps back to his.

“I will give you some privacy.” He turns and leaves the room, and for a moment, I want to call him back. It’s irrational. The whole situation is. Why the hell would he want a doctor to check me out if he is just going to kill me? Why the fuck do I feel safer when he is around?

“Can you tell me your name?” Doctor White asks.

Guilia is still in the room, watching me intently.

“M-my real name? Or my name from work?” I stammer, my voice sounding weak to my ears.

“Your name from work?” Guilia and Doctor White ask at the same time.
