My mind shuts down, and all thoughts of who he is and what he is capable of leave me as my lust takes over. Fuck caution. I’m a dead woman either way. Why not try to get one last blissful moment out of life before it all ends? Without taking another second to think it through, I give him the truth.

“You.”

I watch him closely as shock and disbelief play across his darkly handsome face before he releases my hands. He stumbles back from the bed like he has been slapped before sitting down in the wingback chair beside the window. “What did you just say?”

“I said I was dreaming about you.”

Chapter Eight

Severu

I can’t be hearing her right. Dreaming about me? But that can’t be possible. She must be traumatized after everything that has happened today. She must have hit her head harder than the doc thought.

She swings her legs to the side of the bed, sitting on the edge. Watching me closely, she studies me before shaking her head and getting up.

“Where are you going?” I ask way too harshly.

“The bathroom.” She raises an eyebrow at me as though waiting for me to challenge her.

Instead, I point to a door across the room. I don’t know if I can speak another word to this woman without saying something stupid. She nods before heading in that direction. I watch her ass sway in the skinny jeans she is wearing and have the insane urge to kneel behind her and take a bite.

She switches on the light before entering and then closes the door behind her. As soon as she is out of sight, I press the heel of my palm into my erection, trying to get the fucker to calm down. I can’t let her see me this way. She isn’t acting rationally, and I need to be the voice of reason. Even though God knows I don’t want to.

When she emerges from the bathroom, her demeanor has changed. She doesn’t seem aroused anymore, but she isn’t the frightened woman from the alley either. No, there’s more like an air of resignation around her.

“Are you going to kill me now?” Lira asks without looking away from me. Her voice is eerily calm.

“What?”

“Are you going to kill me now?” she repeats the same words.

“Why would you think that?”

“I watch TV,” she says taking the other chair beside me, her gaze not meeting mine as she stares out the window. “I know who you are. Everyone does. You aren’t going to just let me go home after I watched you kill someone.”

“You said you wouldn’t tell anyone,” I reply.

“And you believe me? Is that really enough to keep you from making sure there are no loose ends?” She sounds sad as she says this.

“You didn’t tell Guilia.”

“I didn’t.”

“Why not?”

“Because I said I wouldn’t.” She finally looks at me again. “It may not mean much to many, but my word means more to me than anything else. It’s all I have.”

I want so badly to pull her into my lap and hold her close. I don’t have the faintest clue what this woman is doing to me. If someone told me she was a witch, I would believe them. I am wrapped up in her in ways that I can’t comprehend or explain.

“I’m not going to kill you,” I say after long moments. “But I can’t let you leave until I’m sure that what you’re saying is true.”

“So, I’m a prisoner?”

“No.” A crazy thought springs to mind, and I know this is the answer to all our problems. “You are already on the Cammareri payroll. You’re just getting a different position. Guilia needs a live-in babysitter.”

“What?”

“Yes. You will be the new nanny for my niece Jennifer. That way I can keep an eye on you.”
