Logan reappeared in the living room and asked, “Can I get you anything to drink? Wine? Whiskey? Beer?”

“I’d love a wine.”

“White or red?”

“Whatever Mia has open. I’m not picky.”

While Logan was gone, there was a knock at the door. Jared stood. “That’s probably Audrey.”

Nikki leaned close. “As long as they’re all busy, how’s the tree topper coming?”

“I still don’t have it, but I think I have it figured out. I’m going back tomorrow and I should be able to make a couple so I have backups. Do you have a plan for making the switch?”

“Not yet. We didn’t want to waste time planning something that might not happen.”

“It’s gonna happen. I’ll make sure of it. I won’t let you down.”

Jared led Audrey and Gram into the living room. Audrey held her grandmother’s hand. “Gram, these are my friends, Wade, Nikki, and London.”

Logan and Mia came in from the other room. Logan handed London a glass of white wine.

“And this is Mia and Logan,” Audrey continued. “This is Mia’s place.”

“Heck of a place, too. It’s real nice,” Gram said.

“We’re so happy to have you join us today, Ms. Abbott.”

Gram waved a hand. “Ah. Call me Ruth.”

“Okay, Ruth. Can we get you something to drink?”

“Coffee if you have it.”

Logan nodded and left the room again.

“Dinner will be out in a minute. Just waiting for the last couple of things to finish,” Mia said.

“You really cooked the whole meal?” Nikki asked.

“Yes.” Mia looked astonished at the question.

“No way.”

“Mia’s quite an excellent cook,” Jared said.

“I just can’t imagine you in a kitchen getting all sweaty, slaving away over a stove.”

“That’s because I don’t get all sweaty,” Mia responded in that haughty tone only she could pull off. “If you’re good at what you do, it’s not a hardship.”

“I hope Jared’s not joking about you being a good cook because I’m starving.” Nikki rubbed her stomach.

“What else is new?” Jared said.

“Is there anything I can do to help?” London asked.

“No, we have it. Why don’t you all take your seats at the table and Logan and I will have the food out in a minute.” Mia waved off the offer of help and returned to the kitchen.

“Is it just me, or is she acting weird?” Nikki asked.
