I stand up, too, and threaten him, pointing my finger at his chest. “Move from this deck chair, and I swear you’ll sleep on the beach tonight.”
He raises an eyebrow. It’s not really a punishment since we’re in the Caribbean.
“And you won’t have sex until we get home.” This seems to have more effect on him, even if he doesn’t lie down on the deck chair again. “What did we say about emergencies when we’re on vacation?”
He rolls his eyes. “That if it’s is not something on fire, someone on their deathbed, or a natural disaster, it’s not really an emergency,” he repeats.
“Right. Now lie down and relax.”
“But you can solve this in five minutes.” His tone is halfway between a plea and a prayer.
“Five minutes we pay assistants, junior managers, and PR people to solve these situations. They’re kissing, Evan. They didn’t kill anyone. Now lie down and relax,” I order.
He huffs as he gets comfortable on the deck chair, and I do the same. “You know you’re bossy when it comes to work, right?” he teases.
“That’s why you’re with me. You like women who are stubborn in life and submissive in bed.”
He bursts out laughing then turns around, kissing the warm skin on my shoulder.
“Do you know that I love you even if you are bossy?” His words catch me by surprise, and when I open my eyes to look at him, I find him fiddling with a straw ring he’s been holding all morning. He takes my left hand and puts it on my finger with a silent request in his eyes. The gesture is so spontaneous for Evan, who normally plans everything out in detail, that it leaves me completely breathless.
Two years ago, I was on a beach like this, blatantly refusing a diamond from the man who wanted to give me his last name and a golden cage to live in. Today I find myself speechless and teary-eyed, nodding yes to a straw ring that represents all the riches a woman could ask for: a man who faces life by her side, loving her constantly through the ups and downs like it was their first day.
