“You got it. Boss?”

Mr. Haute Couture shakes his head. “You can have anything at the bar and you want a kids’ drink?”

“I’ve got stats to get back to,” I answer. “As you can see from how I’m dressed, and which you so kindly pointed out earlier, I’m not really here for clubbing. I’m here for my friend, Amy.”

“You go to Cal with Amy?”

“Yeah, we’re both juniors.”

“Go Bears.”

“Did you go to Cal?”

“I’m a Bruin.”

“Oh. Amy calls it the University of Caucasians Lost Among Asians.”

“Cute.”

“Not really. I shouldn’t have said that. It perpetuates the model minority myth. What did you study at LA?”

“Business Economics.”

“Did you go on to business school?”

“No. The best education is provided by the real world.”

Despite his pretty clothes, he definitely has an edge about him that suggests he might have taken a few courses from the school of hard knocks.

He’s looking up at the third balcony. Following his gaze, I vaguely make out a woman with a dynamite figure. Behind her stands a man nuzzling her neck. I can’t tell for sure, but it looks like she’s staring at me.

Turning back to Darren, I ask, “How did you end up owning a club?”

“Wasn’t comfortable at the other clubs. I wanted something that felt more like home.”

“Have you always been in the club business?”

“No.”

“Did you do something else before The Lotus?”

“I was in the family business.”

“What was that?”

“Various things.”

“Like what?”

“This an interrogation?”

I guess I am asking a lot of questions, but I didn’t know what else to do since it seems like he isn’t in a hurry to leave. I’m surprised he isn’t.

“You can tell me about JD instead,” I offer cheerfully. Maybe I can dig up something helpful for Amy.

“He’s my cousin.”

“I knew that already.”
