She wears a bustier that pushes her tits halfway up to her face and snakeskin leggings.

“Bummer. I just got here. You going to be here tomorrow night?”

“No.”

“Is that a definite?”

“Yes.”

Because I will have kidnapped Casey by then.

Chapter six

Casey

Wepulluptothe gates of his beautiful home in Marin County with views of the bay, Golden Gate Bridge, and San Francisco skyline. In his multi-car garage, Jack parks next to the Bugatti.

I’m giddy because this is actually a big step in our non-relationship. Just last night, he seemed done with me. Now he’s bringing me home.

“You live alone?” I ask.

“No,” he replies.

I wonder who he could be living with? On the drive over, he told me his adoptive father was retired and living with his adoptive mother in the Amalfi Coast. His sister was studying for her master’s degree in Paris.

The answer comes running up to Jack when we enter his home. A German Shepherd greets him with several barks and a wagging tail.

“You didn’t tell me you had a dog!” I say with delight.

I’ve wanted a dog since I was two or three years old, but my dad is allergic to dogs in addition to cats. I promised myself I would get a pet after I graduated from college and was on my own.

“Her name’s Athena,” Jack says as he scratches the back of her neck and receives several licks in the face.

Squatting down, I face the dog and hold out my hand. “Hi, Athena.”

She turns to sniff my hand, then licks me too.

“She’s friendly,” I say.

Jack stares at us. “Not usually.”

After I’ve pet Athena a bit, I ask, “Where’s the cat?”

Jack looks to the other side of the foyer where the feline watches us warily from a distance. When he approaches her, she darts away.

“Did you give her a name yet?” I ask.

“No.”

We walk into the hallway, but the cat is nowhere in sight.

“I don’t think she’s settled down yet,” he explains.

“I get it.”

Just then I hear a door open and shut. Athena starts running that direction.

“Who’s that?” I ask.
