“How about we see how I feel in a few hours?” I try. Hopefully, Jack will have called me by then.

“All right.”

I hear my dad walking away. I grab my phone to text to Jack. I’d call him, but there’s no phone number associated with his texts.

Awaiting your instructions, Sir.

While I wait for a response, I get up to brush my teeth and wash my face. A video call comes in while I’m brushing my hair. Even though I’d rather not look like I just rolled out of bed, I don’t want to miss the call if it’s Jack. I pick it up.

“Morning, Sir,” I greet when I see it’s him.

With his hair perfectly groomed, his smart button-up shirt perfectly pressed, he looks like he’s been up for several hours.

“It’s almost noon,” he replies.

“College circadian rhythms tend to run late, especially when one’s having fun the night before. Speaking of fun, we’re still on for tonight, right?”

“You alone?”

“Yeah, I’m in my bathroom.”

“No one can hear you?”

“Door’s closed, and my dad doesn’t come in my room without knocking. At least, not since he walked in on me changing years ago. I cried a buttload of tears to make sure he wouldn’t do that again. So we good for tonight?”

“Sure.”

I breathe a sigh of relief. “So what does daddy want me to do?”

“I want you to be a good girl. Do what good girls do.”

“Like what?”

“Figure that out yourself but have an answer for me the next time I call.”

“Okay. What else?”

“You already know the part about not coming. Just make sure you stay put until you hear from me.”

“Do you have a sense of where and when?”

“I’ll let you know later. Just keep your phone on you. And be good.”

Wanting to stay on the phone with him longer, I ask, “How’s the kitty doing?”

“She’s fine.”

“What’s she doing now?”

“Napping underneath a sofa.”

“She still scared?”

“You just worry about yourself, princess.”

He hangs up after that. This guy is not talkative at all. I usually like a man of action, but I want more from Jack. Maybe he’s standoffish because he wants to make sure our relationship doesn’t venture much past sex. I guess I’ll take what I can get.

After I’ve brushed my hair and changed, I go downstairs into the kitchen to see what’s for breakfast. Rosita cleans our house and also makes breakfast because my mom’s down in Palm Springs, and even if she were here, she doesn’t like to cook.
