“I just want to see for myself.”

“You can get out a bed when the doctor clears you.”

I contemplate defying Andy, but even though he has a gentler expression than Kai, he doesn’t look like he’ll accept any more crap than his boss would. He also seems to know better than to trust me because he takes a seat opposite my bed, crossing one leg over the other.

“Will the doctor be here soon?” I ask.

“Yes. She should be here any minute, along with your father.”

I sit up straighter. “How is he?”

“The surgery to extract the bullet from his leg was successful.“

Andy got up at a knock on the door. He opened it to let in my dad, who hobbled in on crutches.

“I’ll be outside if you need me,” Andy tells me.

The door closes behind him. An awkward silence between me and my father follow. I’m relieved that he’s okay, but I’m also pissed as hell at him.

“Where’d you learn to shoot like that?” my father asks.

“Luck of the Irish,” I reply.

He nods. “You probably saved my life.”

“Probably?! You don’t know that Andrian guy well.”

“And you do?”

“Thanks to you, I know more about him than I ever wanted to. How did you end on the bad side of a TriadandBratva?”

“I couldn’t pass up the tip we had. I came out to Frisco to carve out my own. I guess I underestimated theJing San.”

“If it wasn’t for Kai…People here don’t use the word ‘Frisco,’ by the way.”

My father narrows his eyes at me. “What’s the deal between you and Kai anyway? How long have you guys been seeing each other?”

“Not long. I didn’t know he was Triad.”

Not that that would have necessarily stopped me. I’ve never been more attracted to a man before.

“And he’s why you weren’t interested in Kenton?”

“I’ll never be interested in Kenton. He’s not my type.”

“But a Triad boss is?”

“You and I would both be dead if it weren’t for him. We owe him. He’s risking war with the gang of his childhood friend for us.”

“You mean foryou.”

I consider how Kai could have gone after Kenton and the laptop. Instead, he dove into the water to save me.

“But how long will his interest in you last?” my father continues. “Seems like he’s reckless and unpredictable, taking on the Bratva.”

“You can keep underestimating Kai, but I don’t think it’s smart to do so.”

“And I wouldn’t trust a Triad guy if I were you.”
